Thursday, August 1, 2024, saw One Piece live action season 2 news teased for Netflix’s Geeked Week 2024, done so via a post from the adaptation’s X account. While the X post didn’t outright confirm the series’ presence, it did tell fans to “set their calendars” for the week of the event, heavily implying its presence there.
Geeked Week also plays a special role in the series’ history, being where the adaptation released its first major promotional videos in 2022. With this in mind, it seems One Piece live action season 2 will follow in the premiere outing’s footsteps and use Geeked Week as their first major update for fans.
One Piece live action season 2 news set to come in September’s Geeked Week
The date of Netflix’s 2024 Geeked Week further supports the idea that One Piece live action season 2 will make a major announcement, set roughly one year after season 2’s announcement. Likewise, with filming having begun in June of this year, it’s likely that a trailer will be produced in time to share at the event, likely highlighting the Straw Hats’ journey into the Grand Line.
The second season is set to begin with its adaptation of the Loguetown arc, which will see Luffy and his crew finally venture into the Grand Line by nature of Reverse Mountain. It’s also been rumored, but not confirmed, that the second and third seasons will be filmed back-to-back, which may finally be confirmed at Geeked Week. This would mean fans can expect a much quicker turnaround time from the second season to the third than the first to the second.
The second season has been the center of much discussion lately following the announcement of its new castings. This includes the divisive choice for Nico Robin, as well as the less divisive castings of characters like Crocus, Dorry, Brogy, and others. It’s expected that additional cast members will still be announced, with a significant number of characters set to appear in the second season still having no name attached to them.
One star who won’t be appearing in season 2 is Jamie Lee Curtis, with the series’ producers confirming as much in a recent interview. Per the interview, Curtis’ schedule couldn’t align with the second season’s filming block, forcing the production team to go in a different direction despite their wish to cast her. While some feel this is a ruse, it’s unlikely to be the case.
Netflix’s series serves as an adaptation of author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s original One Piece manga series and is regarded as one of the best anime/manga adaptations ever. While some fans are concerned with how long the series can reasonably continue, production staff are hopeful to produce six-plus seasons.
