Saturday, October 12, 2024, saw the official X account for mangaka Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece anime and manga franchise announce a major announcement coming. The announcement will concern both Toei Animation’s television anime adaptation of the series and Oda’s original manga, which is currently progressing through its final saga.

The announcement will begin streaming on YouTube at 9:30 pm Japanese Standard Time (JST) on Sunday, October 13, 2024, via the franchise's official YouTube channel. Present for the event will be the television anime’s producer Ryuta Koike. The tease of the announcement concerning both the anime and the manga comes from the series’ editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano.

One Piece’s major announcement concerning both the anime and manga signals a major change

One of the most telling aspects of this news is that the announcement will concern both the One Piece anime adaptation and Oda’s original manga series. While there’s no other information on what the announcement will concern as of this article’s writing, this alone highlights its importance. Likewise, fans have already begun speculating on what the announcement could concern.

The most likely answer is that both the manga and anime will be taking an extended break due to circumstances that are forcing Oda to pause the manga. The anime will likely take a break in turn since this would allow it to have better pacing upon returning. It’s also possible that both the anime and manga are concerned because their regular release schedule is being affected beyond a short-term hiatus.

This is the sentiment many in the fanbase have currently. The consensus is that the anime is likely to switch to a seasonal release schedule, while the manga is likely to enter a bi-weekly schedule. However, this is purely speculative since there’s no other currently available information on the announcement as mentioned above. Nevertheless, this does seem likely considering the announcement concerns both the manga and anime.

What the announcement likely doesn’t concern is the highly anticipated remake of the anime series from Wit Studios and Netflix, THE ONE PIECE. Typically speaking, news on this remake has been given its own stage to shine on and has also been specifically advertised as for the remake. While certainly possible that the remake will be discussed in tomorrow’s announcement, it seems unlikely given what fans currently know.

Oda’s original manga series began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in July 1997. The series is still ongoing and regularly serialized there today, progressing through its final saga as mentioned above. Toei Animation began its television anime adaptation in October 1999, which still runs as a weekly anime today. The anime is currently adapting the Egghead Arc, which is the first arc in the series’ final saga.
