The One Piece: Strong World Episode 0 original video anime (OVA) began streaming on the franchise's official YouTube page for free on Friday, October 13, 2023. Per information from the channel, the OVA will be available to stream for free for the next three months. However, it unfortunately lacks English subtitles and is in Japanese audio.
The One Piece: Strong World Episode 0 OVA serves as an adaptation of the “Chapter 0” storyline found in the canonical Volume 0 of the series. The volume was given out to theatergoers in Japan who saw the Strong World film. The story reveals the past of the legendary pirate Shiki, who is the film’s antagonist and also debuts in the film.
The free streaming release of the One Piece: Strong World OVA is seemingly meant to coincide with the actual Strong World film airing on Fuji TV and affiliated stations this Saturday in Japan. The film originally opened in Japanese theaters in December 2009 and was the tenth film in the franchise overall.
Shiki’s origin story in One Piece: Strong World OVA put on YouTube for free (but without English subtitles)
While the One Piece: Strong World OVA story is something fans are interested in viewing, the unfortunate choice to release it without English subtitles limits this opportunity. Ironically, it’s likely that English-speaking fans who are the least knowledgeable of the OVA’s existence, and whose chances of otherwise experiencing it are vastly lower than Japanese fans.
That being said, it’s understandable considering the aforementioned airing of the Strong World film itself in Japan this Saturday, October 14, 2023. The franchise is likely looking to ensure that franchise fans who’ve never seen the film or the OVA before have the opportunity to experience both within a relatively short time. This also explains why the OVA is only being made available for a short three months, rather than being left up permanently.
Officially, however, franchise staff claimed that the video was released on YouTube to commemorate the return of Film Red in theaters in Japan starting on Friday, October 20. This new theatrical run for the latest film in the franchise is set to last for one month, giving fans an opportunity to either review or view the film for the first time.
Interestingly, the Strong World OVA never received a commercial release, even in Japan. Instead, House Foods, a collaborator on the anime adaptation of the OVA’s source material, gave away 3,000 DVDs of the anime in 2010. Online resale listings of these DVDs range from as low as $300 USD all the way up to more than $700 USD.
