Monday, November 18, 2024, saw One Punch Man’s original creator, ONE, launch a brand new Shonen Jump manga with Kiyoto Shitara, titled Bug Ego. The series is being published digitally under the general Shonen Jump brand, which has no dedicated platform or magazine as of this article’s writing. ONE and Shitara published the first four chapters of their series at once on Monday, November 18, which are now available to read.

Per MANGA Plus’ official page for the series, it also seems set for serialization on a monthly basis, with the next issue set to be released on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. MANGA Plus also doesn’t attach the series to any particular magazine or publication platform, suggesting that it may be released at an irregular schedule following next month’s planned issue.

Further suggesting that the Bug Ego manga will be released at a monthly pace is the length of each of the first four chapters that were made available. Chapter 1 spanned 69 pages, while chapters 2, 3, and 4 are 75, 59, and 48 pages, respectively. These are typical issue lengths for monthly series, hence how they suggest the manga’s release schedule. MANGA Plus describes the series as:

“Kindhearted high school transfer student Hitsujiya offers to help his lonely classmate Kokudo with a few social techniques and life hacks. However, Kokudo seems to know some true hacks that can alter the very fabric of reality. But is it real? What if there’s a 1% chance that it is real? Would you try these hacks? The creator of One-Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100 teams up with talented artist Kiyoto Shitara to bring you a truly mysterious and bizarre tale of youth!”

While ONE is likely best known as the original creator of the One Punch Man series, he’s also the creative and artistic genius behind the original Mob Psycho 100 manga series. ONE was responsible for the artwork and story for both series in their original formats. However, the former was remade into a digital manga series with Yusuke Murata of Eyeshield 21 fame illustrating it.

Shitara’s prior works are less well-known, but they have significant experience in the manga industry. Their prior credits to Bug Ego include being the author and illustrator for the Awesome Fellows! Perfect, U12 Kodome Fellows, Shinobuna! Chiyo-chan, and Katagi Modoshi manga series. Each series began serialization in 2010, 2016, 2017, and 2022, respectively. As of this article’s writing, Shitara has no other prior credits in the manga industry attached to their name.

ONE’s One Punch Man web manga began serialization in 2009 and is still ongoing. Murata’s remake began in 2012 and is still serialized regularly in Weekly Shonen Jump in North America and Tonari no Young Jump in Japan. Mob Psycho 100’s original manga ran from April 2012 to December 2017, with studio BONES’ anime adaptation running for three seasons from July 2016 to December 2022.
