Based on the manga written and illustrated by Mikihisa Konishi, the narrative for the Petals of Reincarnation anime centers around Toya Senji, a high school boy, who, despite being immensely talented, belittles himself due to constantly comparing himself with his genius older brother.

Senji wants to excel in something and garner fame. One day, he meets Haito Le Buffett, a long-absent classmate in his high school. The boy learns that Haito used the "Branch of Reincarnation" to claim "talent" from her past lives, where she was renowned as a legendary swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi.

She further reveals that once a person uses the blade, they become a "Returner" or a person reincarnated with talents from their past lives. Toya Senji learns that there are many such "Returners," who have ambitious plans with their unique talents.
