On Saturday, August 10, 2024, the official website for Rurouni Kenshin season 2 began streaming a new promotional video for the series, which confirmed advanced screenings ahead of its October 2024 release. The website also confirmed the ending theme song for the series, which was previewed in the promotional video.
Rurouni Kenshin season 2 will feature a consecutive two-cour run, similar to the first season of the remake of the 1996 television anime. The second season is the continuation of the 2023 readaptation of author and illustrator Nobuhiro Watsuki’s original manga series of the same name. The original 1996 anime was produced by Studio Gallop and Studio Deen, while LIDEN FILMS is producing the readaptation.
Rurouni Kenshin season 2 reveals ending theme, cour count, and advanced screenings before October premiere
As mentioned, the latest trailer for Rurouni Kenshin season 2 officially confirms the anime’s advanced screenings ahead of its October 2024 release window. The PV also confirmed the season's title The Kyoto Uprising and its consecutive two cour run. It also previewed the anime’s ending theme, which is titled, Suiko Senten, and will be performed by NOMELON NOMELON, according to the anime’s official website.
The roughly 45-second promotional video focuses primarily on central characters Kaoru Kamiya and Kenshin Himura, as well as several others who’ll appear in the season. This includes new characters who were not introduced in the first season, as well as returning supporting characters like Megumi Takani and Aoshi Shinomori.
Notably absent from the trailer are core members of the series’ central group, the so-called Team Kenshin, Yahiko Myojin, and Sanosuke Sagara. While it is expected that Kaoru and the rest of Team Kenshin will have a minimal role in the second season given the titular character’s separation from them, the pair’s total lack of presence is concerning.
The two advance screenings of the series are scheduled for Sunday, September 22, 2024. While the anime’s official website lists the year as 2023, this seems to be a typo, as a link to the ticket sale website confirms the 2024 year for the event date. One screening will be held at TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi, while the other will be held at T-Joy Tokyo.
Present at both screenings will be Soma Saito, who voices the titular Kenshin Himura, and Hino Satoshi, who voices Saito Hajime. Present at the T-Joy Kyoto screening only will be Taku Yashiro and Aya Yamane, who voice Sanosuke Sagara and Misao Makimachi, respectively. Yamane debuted as the voice of Makimachi in the final episode of the first season, but the character will be formally and fully introduced in the upcoming sequel.
As mentioned, Rurouni Kenshin season 2 serves as the continuation of the readaptation of Watsuki’s original manga series. The original manga was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from April 1994 to September 1999.
