Friday, May 17, 2024 saw a Sakamoto Days anime officially listed for a general 2024 release window on Netflix, discovered via the May issue of License Global. License Global is an online publication which keeps track of licensing registrations, hence why they were able to discover Netflix’s apparent ordering of the anime series.
This information originally came from X (formerly Twitter) user @baguetteZero (Baguette), whose information was then verified by other noteworthy leaks accounts like @MangaReporter.
While Netflix has not officially announced their Sakamoto Days anime in any capacity, this information being cited from License Global by typically reputable sources suggests the info to be accurate.
The Sakamoto Days anime would serve as the official television anime adaptation of author and illustrator Yuto Suzuki’s original manga series of the same name. Suzuki originally launched his manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in November 2020, where it is still ongoing and regularly serialized today.
Sakamoto Days anime ordered by Netflix, but no other information currently available
Unfortunately, there's no additional info on the Sakamoto Days anime series beyond Netflix allegedly ordering and licensing the series.
As mentioned above, this info comes from the May 2024 issue of License Global’s magazine, and was first leaked on Twitter by Baguette, which was then verified by @MangaReporter.
The news is especially notable given how popular Suzuki’s original manga series is, being one of few series to premiere in recent years and reach a triple-digit length in terms of chapter count. That likewise speaks to the series’ popularity, and is also emblematic of why fans have been eagerly awaiting the news of an anime adaptation.
As of this article’s writing, however, there is no additional information whatsoever on the upcoming Sakamoto Days anime series beyond what’s mentioned above. This includes information on the exact release window within the 2024 calendar year, animation studio, staff, cast, planned release approach, and more.
Likewise, some fans are concerned that Netflix will take the “batch” approach with the series, dropping an entire season’s worth of episodes at once. While good for binge watchers, this typically results in less staying power in the anime cultural zeitgeist.
Fans are thus hoping for a weekly release schedule on the platform, as the incredibly popular Delicious In Dungeon anime series has been doing with great success and staying power.
Similarly to Delicious In Dungeon, it’s also expected that Netflix will put out at least 24 episodes of the anime series, whether released in large batches or via airing weekly on the service. That stems from how much source material there is to work with in the manga, as well as how popular and anticipated the anime series is.
The series follows eponymous protagonist Taro Sakamoto, an ex-hitman who was unrivaled and earned legendary status in the underworld. However, he one day fell in love and decided to retire, start a family, and a convenience store business.
Now overweight and enjoying retirement, Sakamoto finds the underworld still chasing after him, forcing him to fight in order to protect his family, business, and new life.
