Monday, October 28, 2024, saw publisher Shueisha announce that a spinoff novel of the Sakamoto Days manga would be released on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, in Japan. As of this article’s writing, it’s unknown whether or not the spinoff novel will be translated into English and sold internationally.
The spinoff novel for the Sakamoto Days manga is titled Sakamoto Days Koroshiya Blues, or Sakamoto Days: Assassin Blues in English. Renka Misaki is writing the novel per the latest available information. It was also confirmed that the spinoff novel will include exclusive episodes and storylines not present in the original manga series by mangaka Yuto Suzuki.
Sakamoto Days manga’s next spinoff novel to be penned by author of first spinoff novel
Renka Misaki most notably wrote the original spinoff novel for the franchise and is returning for the latest offshoot of the mainline Sakamoto Days manga. The original novel was titled Sakamoto Days Koroshiya no Method, which translates to Sakamoto Days: Assassin’s Method in English. The original spinoff novel shipped in Japan in April 2023 and has yet to be translated and released in English as of this article’s writing.
It’s likewise unclear as of this writing exactly what the upcoming novel will focus on beyond being a general spinoff of the mainline series. The first novel focused on several different stories, including characters both within Sakamoto’s main group of allies and without. For example, Order members Shishiba and Osaragi were given their own spinoffs in the novel despite technically being enemies of Sakamoto.
This would suggest that Misaki will take a similar approach with the upcoming spinoff, likely expanding the scope of characters it includes in its events. It’s also possible that the second spinoff will be significantly longer and more bountiful than the first considering the success of the mainline series as of late.
This success is best highlighted by the announcement of a television anime adaptation of the mainline manga series by TMS Entertainment. The anime is set to premiere in January 2025 and will be streamed globally by Netflix. Masaki Watanabe is directing at TMS, with Taku Kishimoto overseeing series scripts, and Yo Moriyama serving as the character designer.
The mainline manga’s success is also highlighted by the ongoing manga spinoff titled Sakamoto Holidays, which is headed by Tetsu Okawa who works as an assistant on the mainline series. The spinoff began in Shueisha’s Saikyo Jump magazine in July 2024 and is still being regularly serialized.
Suzuki’s Sakamoto Days manga began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in November 2020 and is still regularly serialized today. 160 of the manga’s currently released 187 chapters have been collected into 18 manga volumes. A 19th is set to release in Japan on November 1, 2024. Of these 19 planned for and/or released, 15 have been released or announced for release in English.
