Saturday, November 23, 2024, saw mangaka Hiroyuki Takei’s Shaman King: The Super Star manga officially end with the release of its 68th chapter on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket. The Super Star is the newest arc for the larger Shaman King manga from Takei, who has already confirmed that a sequel is coming in the form of Shaman King Yard.

However, there is no official release date for the Yard sequel as of this article’s writing, suggesting that there will be a break between Shaman King: The Super Star and Yard. Readers can expect a release date for the upcoming series to be revealed sometime in the coming weeks and months following a break for Takei.

Shaman King: The Super Star to be followed by Shaman King Yard at an unknown date

As touched on above, Shaman King: The Super Star was its own manga, but served as the next arc in Takei’s larger Shaman King franchise. The manga originally began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from June 1998 to August 2004. However, Takei left Shueisha in late 2017 after creative differences led to a dispute. The series is now published by Kodansha.

Kodansha has also taken over publication duties for the entire franchise, including releasing the original manga digitally in English in October 2020. Other sequels such as Flowers and Zero prequel are also currently published by Kodansha. However, almost every installment in the franchise up to 2017 was released under the Shueisha brand. The manga’s future seems set to be with Kodansha for the time being.

The Super Star originally began serialization in Kodansha’s Shonen Magazine Edge manga publication in May 2018. This serialization was preceded by three prologue chapters and was plagued by irregular publication and several hiatuses during its run. The manga switched to the Magazine Pocket service in October 2023 when Shonen Magazine Edge ended publication, remaining there until its end earlier today.

The manga has been collected into eight compilation volumes, all eight of which have been translated into and released in English by Kodansha USA Publishing. The overseas publisher also releases the manga digitally, describing it as follows:

“Can't get enough SHAMAN KING goodness? Then hitch a ride with Alumi, Death Zero and other SHAMAN KING favorites in this action-packed spinoff, SHAMAN KING: THE SUPER STAR!”

Takei’s original manga was first adapted into a television anime series in 2001 by Xebec studios, which ran from July 2001 to September 2002 for a total of 64 episodes. April 2021 saw a readaptation of the series from Bridge release on Netflix, running for 52 episodes total from April 2021 to April 2022. The first season of the Flowers sequel adaptation aired in Japan for 13 episodes from January to April 2024.
