Saturday, June 29, 2024, saw Bandai Namco Filmworks and anime studio Pierrot reveal that the latter is producing a new, currently untitled magical girl television anime series. This news was announced alongside the release of a promotional video that previews the previous five series in the genre produced by the studio, all of which are notably from the 1980 and 90s.
Two images were also released by studio Pierrot alongside the announcement, one of which is a graphic that simply reads “Pierrot Magical Girls Series.” Magical items from each of the five series the studio has produced in this genre flank this message. There’s also an illustration seen at the end of the promotional video, specifically promoting the new, unnamed anime and adorning it with text that reads:
“I want you to sign it again.”
In addition, studio Pierrot has also opened an X account and official website for its currently unnamed magical girl anime franchise. The announcement also comes on the 40th anniversary of the broadcast of the final episode of its first magical girl anime series, 1983’s Magical Angel Creamy Mami.
Studio Pierrot officially announces new untitled magical girl anime series
Unfortunately, as of this article’s writing, there is no additional information on the new magical girl television anime series from Pierrot. However, with an official website and X account already opened, fans can expect more information on the series to come sooner rather than later. A teaser promotional video is likely to be the first additional news fans get on the project, which is then likely to be followed by starring casting announcements.
One possibility for the new series is that it will somehow tie together or link all of the animation studio’s previous productions in the genre. The emphasis on their past works in this opening round of promotional material for the new, upcoming series does somewhat suggest this. The aforementioned illustration’s text of “I want you to sing it again” also alludes to a similar idea or concept.
Pierrot’s previous five series, include the aforementioned Magical Angel Creamy Mami, Magical Fairy Persia, Magical Star Magical Emi, Magical Idol Pastel Yumi, and Fancy Lala. These series each respectively ran for 52 episodes from 1983 to 1984, 48 episodes from 1984 to 195, 38 episodes from 1985 to 1986, 25 episodes in 1986, and 26 episodes in 1998.
Pierrot is a globally lauded Japanese animation studio first established in May 1972 by Yuji Nunokawa. Its headquarters are currently located in Mitaka, Tokyo. The company is best known for the production of several globally famous anime series, including Naruto, Bleach, Tokyo Ghoul, Yu Yu Hakusho, Black Clover, Boruto, and more.
