The Dragon Ball Super Gallery project continues to celebrate the work and legacy of manga legend, Akira Toriyama. This time, it's Takehiko Inoue, the author of Slam Dunk and Vagabond, who has paid tribute to this colossus of the industry in a very peculiar manner. This is because the mangaka has made an illustration of Goku with a jacket that has the words "Thank you" written on it as a very nice gesture to Toriyama and his work.

Several prominent mangaka have already provided their services for the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project and it's Inoue's turn. Inoue was very vocal on social media regarding his admiration for Toriyama when the latter died on March 1, 2024.

Despite not doing a lot of work in recent years, Inoue has taken the time to celebrate Toriyama and his cover is an example of his style while staying respectful of the mangaka's art.

The Dragon Ball Super Gallery project features a new cover drawn by Takehiko Inoue

Takehiko Inoue is the mangaka chosen to draw the seventeenth volume cover for the Dragon Ball Super Gallery, which are all reinterpretations of the aforementioned covers of the original manga by Akira Toriyama. This illustration shows Goku from one of his iconic chapters, with a little emblem that says, "Thank you." It is obviously a small tribute to Toriyama's recent passing on March 1.

That detail has not gone unnoticed by a vast majority of fans, with many of them appreciating Inoue's little nod to the deceased author. This goes to show the degree of respect that he has for the latter. Moreover, it also adds to the more than notorious influence and admiration that Toriyama had all over the manga industry.

Reactions online

Inoue rose to prominence in the 90s because of the hit basketball manga Slam Dunk which focused on teenager Hanamichi Sakuragi and his journey to fall in love with the game. However, it was through his series titled Vagabond that Inoue reached a far new plateau as an artist and writer, retelling the life of the legendary samurai, Musashi Miyamoto. Here are some fan reactions to the recent tribute:

"Very nice art. He even put a thank you and the day Toriyama died as a patch," an X user wrote.
"Incredible as you would expect from Inoue. The patch is a really nice touch," another person mentioned.
"The jacket says March 1st, 2024. The day Toriyama passed away. Gonna make me cry again," another netizen pointed out.

Takehiko Inoue is the latest to pay tribute to Toriyama during the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project. Many other manga artists will continue to do so, with Hunter X Hunter and Yu Yu Hakusho author Yoshihiro Togashi being the next ones in line.
