Monday, November 25, 2024, saw Shogakukan open an official website for The Dinner Table Detective anime television series, confirming its production and 2025 release window. The anime will adapt the original mystery novel series of the same name, written by Tokuya Higashigawa and illustrated by Yusuke Nakamura. Mangaka Oreko Tachibana is designing the original characters for the television anime series.

No other information about The Dinner Table Detective anime adaptation has been shared as of this article’s writing, but should eventually come via the anime’s official website. While this is the first anime adaptation of Higashigawa and Nakamura’s original series, the novels have been adapted into several other different mediums.

The Dinner Table Detective anime is set to release sometime in 2025

In addition to the above information, a graphic was shared via the official website for The Dinner Table Detective anime. It features the central trio of Reiko Hoshi, Kazamatsuri, and Kageyama. The graphic also has Japanese text on the background behind Kageyama, as well as caution tape in the foreground with the words “keep out” in English and presumably in Japanese. No other promotional material was released alongside the initial announcement.

As mentioned above, the original series has been adapted into several other mediums. This includes a stage play, a live-action series in 2011, live-action specials in 2012 and 2013, and a final live-action series in 2013. Aya Kawase is illustrating a manga adaptation serialized in Shogakukan’s Petit Comic josei demographic magazine from April to November 2011. Shogakukan also publishes the original novel series.

The novel’s three volumes were released from September 2010 to December 2012, with a sequel being published from March 2021 to September 2024 in two volumes. The sequel series is titled Shin Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de, with both Higashigawa and Nakamura. As of this article’s writing, none of the franchise’s print media has been translated to and released in English.

The Dinner Table Detective anime will adapt the story of the original novels, set in Kunitachi in Tokyo. Reiko Hosho is the daughter of the world-famous Hosho Group’s owner but has decided to become a rookie detective rather than work in the family business. Her boss is Inspector Kazamatsuri, the son of the owner of Kazamatsuri Motors. The two work together to solve difficult cases but often run into trouble.

This prompts the pair to turn to Reiko’s butler and driver Kageyama, who often insults Reiko with harsh language. However, he always manages to brilliantly solve the case after the two pester him for help. This is the context of the trio’s adventures, which see them solving many different cases and learning significant life lessons and more about each other along the way.
