On Friday, November 15, 2024, Kodansha USA Publishing officially announced that the television The Moon on a Rainy Night anime adaptation series is in production. Along with the announcement, the series' official logo was unveiled. However, no futher significant information regarding its production has been revealed as of this article’s writing.
In addition to The Moon on a Rainy Night anime’s logo unveiling, original series creator and mangaka Kuzushiro drew a celebratory illustration featuring the series’ two central characters. It is unclear when the anime is set to premiere or when more news is coming, but a late 2025 premiere and more news in early 2025 seems likely based on this initial announcement.
The Moon on a Rainy Night anime receives adaptation after 3+ years of serialization
As mentioned above, original manga creator Kuzushiro shared a celebratory illustration of the central characters, Saki and Kanon. It can be presumed that the colors used for each character design in the illustration will match what The Moon on a Rainy Night anime uses when it releases. This image was released through Kodansha, as the anime has no official social media accounts active as of this article’s writing.
Kodansha also confirmed that The Moon on a Rainy Night anime will be distributed worldwide across various countries. While it didn’t expand on how the series would be distributed and where exactly, this does suggest that some sort of international streaming release will come for the series. However, it’s likely that such additional information is still a long time from being revealed given that this is only the initial production announcement.
Kuzushiro’s original manga series is serialized in Kodansha’s Comic Days, a seinen-demographic digital publication. The manga began in June 2021, and has eight volumes planned for release or already released in Japan. Of these eight, six are either planned for release or have been released in English. Kodansha USA Publishing licenses the manga for release in English, and describes it as follows:
"One rainy night, Saki is rushing to a piano lesson when she crashes into a beautiful, long-haired girl, dropping her sheet music in the process. Saki stutters an apology, but the girl simply hands back her sheet music and leaves without a word. Saki begins her first day of high school the following morning, only to find the stranger from the night before sitting at the desk next to hers."
It continues:
"She learns that the girl's name is Kanon and that she is not quite completely deaf, but very hard of hearing. Though Kanon needs to be close to people to read their lips, she tends to push people away with her icy demeanor. Through one kind gesture, Saki slowly begins breaking down the walls around Kanon, even as she feels something new blossoming within her."
Further updates regarding the anime's production are awaited.
