On November 27, 2024, the official YouTube channel of Kadokawa, a Japanese production company, released the first teaser video of The Summer Hikaru Died anime. The video has announced the series' release window, that is, July 2025. It has also revealed the main voice casting and staff members associated with the anime adaptation. Studio Cygames will be animating the series.

The Summer Hikaru Died is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Mokumokuren. The manga series has 5 volumes in publication (Japanese) and 4 in publication (English).

The Summer Hikaru Died anime set to be released in July 2025

The teaser video The Summer Hikaru Died anime consists of the series' preview, which starts with the protagonists, Hikaru and Yoshiki, sitting on a bench. These two start talking about their future plans as a few eerie visuals are showcased. Out of nowhere, Yoshiki asks Hikaru whether the personality sitting before him is actually real.

The entire view of the video then changes as Hikaru forcibly hugs Yoshiki and asks him to never tell anyone about his reality. The English-subtitled trailer for The Summer Hikaru Died anime has been released on Netflix's YouTube channel. The series will be streaming on Netflix in July 2025.

It will be animated by Studio Cygames (Princess Connect). Two main voice castings revealed alongside the teaser trailer include Hikaru Indou, voiced by Shuuichirou (Nukumizu from Makeine) and Yoshiki Tsujinaka, voiced by Kobayashi Chiaki (Gabimaru from Hell's Paradise).

The staff members include Ryouhei Takeshita (director of Eromanga Sensei) as the director and composer and Masanobu Hiraoka (key animator of some episodes of Chainsaw Man) as the key animator. Meanwhile, Yuuichi Takahashi (character designer of Vivy: Flourite Eye's Song) will serve as the character designer.

The Summer Hikaru Died anime is a horror-mystery series taking place in a small village where two boys, Hikaru and Yoshiki, spend every day of their lives together. Being the only children of their age in the entire village, these two find peace in their company and due to this, they keep growing closer. However, Yoshiki has noticed something amiss and it has to do with what Hikaru has become.

Unlike in the past, Yoshiki observes something different about his friend but he can't put his finger on it. So, one day when he asks Hikaru about this, he transforms into a horrid being that starts threatening Yoshiki for his life, while also confessing his love for him. Stuck with a monster in his friend's skin, what does the future hold for Yoshiki?
