Friday, August 30, 2024 saw the Tohai Mahjong anime announce its official Japanese release date of Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 2:23AM Japanese Standard Time (JST). The news was confirmed via the official X (formerly Twitter) account for the series. The series is set to run on MBS and TBS before airing on other networks. Unfortunately, the international streaming information has yet to be confirmed as of this article’s writing.
The Tohai Mahjong anime will serve as an adaptation of author and illustrator Koji Shinasak’s original Tohai seinen manga series. The original manga ran in Akita Shoten’s Young champion magazine from June 27, 2006 to April 12, 2011. However, similarly to Hirohiko Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, the series has run for decades as multiple stories under the larger Tohai name.
Tohai Mahjong anime officially premieres in the first weekend of October
Unfortunately, no additional information on the Tohai Mahjong anime was revealed alongside the announcement of the official release date. Likewise, with the series’ premiere just over a month away as of this article’s writing, fans can expect some sort of additional news in the coming weeks. Additional cast and staff announcements seem most likely. .
However, both cast and staff have already been revealed to varying degrees in recent months. Jun Hatori is directing the anime series at EAST FISH STUDIO, with Mariko Kunisawa overseeing the series scripts. Sayaka Anesaki is designing the characters, while Yusuke Shirato and Yuki Kishida are composing the music.
Currently announced starring cast includes Kohsuke Tanabe as Kei, Shunsuke Takeuchi as Tojima, Fairouz Ai as Amina, Tsuyoshi Koyama as Noriyuki Takatsu, and Chinatsu Akasaki as Yu Katsuragi. As mentioned above, it is expected that additional cast for the Tohai Mahjong anime will be announced in the coming weeks. The series has already released two promotional videos since being announced in January 2024.
Shinasaka followed up the original series with the 16-volume Tohai: Hitobashira-hen manga from May 2011 to May 2017. This was then followed by the 10-volume Tohai: Minagoroshi-hen from September 2017 to June 2021, in turn followed by the currently releasing Tohai: Cold Girl which began in September 2021. Cold Girl has currently been collected into seven volumes, none of which have been translated into English.
Shinasaka’s manga series also inspired a live-action film adaptation in 2013. The film was written and directed by Yuichi Onuma, and starred Goki Maeda, Hidekazu Ichinose, and Yasukaze Motomiya. Pony Canyon describes the anime as follows:
“Money, women, organs. Kei, a high school boy, frequents the underground mahjong parlor teeming with desires, earning him the moniker 'K of Ice' in the underworld due to his cold-hearted strategy and stylish gameplay. Rumors also circulate that he keeps a girl at his home.”
