Thursday, August 1, 2024, in Japan saw Undead Unluck officially announce the new season’s Winter 2025 release window via a new promotional video released on X. Additionally, the announcement confirmed that the new season will begin with a one-hour premiere, which will seemingly focus on Billy and Juiz’s fight teased at the end of season 1.

The video was posted by the official X account for the television anime adaptation of author and illustrator Yoshifumi Tozuka’s original manga series of the same name. The anime’s first season premiered in Fall 2023 and ran for two continuous cours for a total of 24 episodes, ending on March 23, 2024.

Undead Unluck anime confirms new season will at least begin in Winter 2025 season with one-hour premiere

It’s worth mentioning that as of this article’s writing, it’s unclear if this one-hour special will mark the formal premiere of Undead Unluck season 2 or not. The official account’s post is ambiguously worded, not using the term “season 2” or anything adjacent to describe the coming Winter 2025 special. With this in mind, some are under the impression that this special will air before season 2 formally premieres and begins its weekly airing.

However, this is likely just poor phrasing and translation on behalf of the X account and X’s built-in translation system. If the series were interested in just doing a standalone special based on Juiz and Billy’s fight rather than having it mark season 2’s premiere, a movie would make more sense. This is especially true in the post-Mugen Train movie industry, where canonical anime films continue to dominate the box office in Japan and abroad.

In any case, fans at least can confirm that the anime is receiving some sort of sequel, which is a great sign for the series’ health and future continuation overall. Likewise, even if this special will not mark the formal start of season 2, it should at least confirm that season 2 will be coming eventually.

With the manga currently being one of the most popular and longest-running in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, the anime’s success is certainly welcome and exciting.

In this context of great signs for the anime, the announcement’s August 1 date is also encouraging for the series’ future given its significance in the plot. This marks the day that protagonist Fuuko Izumo meets deuteragonist Andy in the series, on August 1, 2020. This directly leads to the start of the manga’s plot and subsequent events.

Tozuka’s manga first premiered in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in January 2020, where it is still ongoing and regularly serialized today. As of this article’s writing, 196 of the manga’s 216 chapters have been collected into 21 compilation volumes. The 21st volume is currently slated for an August 2 release date in Japan. 17 of these volumes have been translated into English as of this writing.
