Friday, July 26, 2024, saw the official X accounts for both Adult Swim and the Uzumaki anime series confirm the show’s September 2024 release date in a new trailer. Additionally, both accounts confirmed that the anime will be available to stream the next day on HBO’s Max streaming service following its airing on Adult Swim the night before.
The Uzumaki anime’s official confirmation of a release date comes just weeks after a recent interview with the original manga’s author and illustrator Junji Ito, who also confirmed a 2024 release window. Ito also confirmed that the anime has lived up to his expectations and earned his seal of approval, which is especially encouraging since most of the anime’s delays stemmed from adaptational and production issues.
After several delays and years of production limbo, Uzumaki anime premieres on September 28, 2024
Per the aforementioned posts from the official Adult Swim and series X accounts, the Uzumaki anime is set to premiere on Adult Swim on Saturday, September 28, 2024. As of this article’s writing, no release time has been confirmed, but this information is likely to be shared in the coming weeks and months leading into the anime’s premiere.
The new promotional video, which began streaming alongside the release date announcement, focuses primarily on introducing several characters and their interactions with the titular spiral. True to the source material, the trailer is extremely unnerving, with the choice to animate the series in black and white a good one based on the trailer alone.
Roughly around the same time as the aforementioned Junji Ito interview, the official X account for the anime series revealed its starring Japanese and English cast.
For the Japanese cast, Uki Satake stars as Kirie Goshimo, with Shin-ichiro MMiki voicing Shuichi Saito and Mariya Ise voicing Azami Kurotani. Kirie’s Dad will be played by Toshio Furukawa, Shuichi’s Mom will be played by Mika Dui, and Shuichi’s dad by Takashi Matsuyama. Katayama will be voiced by Katsutoshi Matsuzaki.
In the English cast, Abby Trott will voice Kirie, while Robbie Daymond will voice Shuichi and Cristina Vee will voice Azami. Kirie’s Dad will be voiced by Doug Stone, while Shuichi’s Mom will be voiced by Mona Marshall and Shuichi’s Dad by Aaron LaPlante. Finally, Katayama will be voiced by Max Mittleman in the English dub.
The Uzumaki anime will adapt Ito’s original manga series of the same name, which first began serialization in January 1998 and ran until August 1999 in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits magazine.
The anime was first announced in 2019 but suffered from multiple delays in the years since. These delays were caused by a variety of reasons, ranging from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to the production staff requesting a delay to heighten the anime’s quality.
