The One Piece anime remake is a new project taken up by Wit Studio, and the President of the organization revealed the reason for the same. This new project was initiated to draw in newer fans. At the time of writing, the series has over 1000 episodes, thus garnering new fans' attention is likely a challenging feat. Moreover, there also are other similar issues with the existing series.

In an interview with RealSound, published on July 2, George Wada from Wit Studio gave his insight on what could be one of their biggest projects of all time. The One Piece anime remake is something that the entire anime and manga community is looking forward to, owing to the legacy that the original series has built over the past few decades.

The true reason behind the One Piece anime remake

There are several reasons why the original anime faces challenges in attracting a new generation of anime enthusiasts. The original anime's long runtime is one of the reasons behind it.

The President of Wit Studio shared his reason behind making a remake of the legendary anime in an interview with RealSound. He reasoned that the younger generation is more accustomed to watching modern visuals and thus relating to a series that started airing nearly 25 years ago could be difficult for them.

“Due to technological advancements, young people who are used to watching modern anime might find the visuals of One Piece, which started airing 25 years ago, difficult to watch because of the different format,” said George Wada

The earlier episodes followed the 4:3 aspect ratio which is not ideal for the screens available to the average anime consumer today. While Toei Animation is an impeccable studio, the earlier episodes do not have the same standards that the current episodes do. Therefore, Wit Studio will have the opportunity to provide good-quality animation from the get-go when the One Piece anime remake debuts.

Another issue with the anime is the pacing. While the percentage of filler episodes in this title is less, it has negatively impacted the pacing of the series. Furthermore, plenty of episodes were dragged out and the adaptation rate (chapters per episode) was low, which added to bad pacing. Additionally, Wada also stated that Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the original series wished for the entire world to experience this wonderful chronicle.

“Both Mr. Oda and we share the desire to expand anime to people who don’t know about it, even on a global scale, and ‘The One Piece’ was planned as a gateway to that,” said George Wada

In conclusion, it’s quite clear that the One Piece anime remake, along with other adaptations of the original series are intended to pull newer fans. The aim seems to create a wider fanbase and take the series to a global scale. The success of the live-action adaptation is a clear indication. Furthermore, the remake project is in good hands since Wit Studio has animated some of the most popular titles like Spy x Family, the first season of Vinland Saga, Attack on Titan, and The Great Pretender to name a few.
