One Piece has recently taken a break from publication, allowing mangaka Eiichiro Oda to research to refine the structure of the story. During this hiatus, he has also addressed numerous questions in Weekly Shonen Jump issue #49's Special Q&A session that fans have been eager to see answered. One particularly important topic that Oda discussed is the bounty system used by the Cross Guild.

This group, founded by key figures such as Buggy, Crocodile, and Mihawk, has seen a meteoric rise in the world of One Piece. They have managed to turn the tables on the Marines by creating their own bounty system. Instead of assigning specific amounts of Berries, the Cross Guild ranks the Marines based on a crown and star system, although how they translate into Berries had not been thoroughly explained until now.

Oda has filled in the blanks, which has helped fans get a better understanding of how these pirates prioritize some of the Marine figures.

Eiichiro Oda recently clarified the specifics of the Cross Guild’s bounty system consisting of stars and crowns. Each star equals a bounty of 100 million Berries and ten stars is the equivalent of one crown, which is worth one billion Berries.

Marine Captains and Commodores have a bounty of one star, meaning they are worth 100 million Berries. Rear Admirals are assigned three stars, equivalent to 300 million Berries, while Vice Admirals hold a five-star bounty, making them worth 500 million Berries.

Admirals have a bounty of three crowns, or three billion Berries. Prominent figures such as Garp are also assigned three crowns. The Fleet Admiral, presently Akainu, has a five crown bounty, meaning his bounty is five billion Berries.

It is interesting to compare these bounties with the ones the Marines have placed on some of the most notorious pirates. For example, Fleet Admiral Akainu's bounty of five billion Berries is more than Kaido's bounty of 4.6 billion Berries, Big Mom's bounty of 4.3 billion Berries, and even Shanks' bounty of four billion Berries.

However, Akainu's bounty is still below that of legendary pirates such as Gol D. Roger and Whitebeard. The Pirate King's bounty was as high as 5.5 billion Berries, while the Strongest Man in the World's bounty was just over five billion Berries. Meanwhile, the series’ protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, currently has a bounty of three billion Berries.

The founders of the Cross Guild also hold considerable bounties. Buggy’s bounty is set at 3.189 billion Berries, and Mihawk has a bounty surpassing Buggy’s at 3.59 billion Berries. Only Crocodile has a slightly lower bounty at 1.965 billion Berries.

Final thoughts

The Cross Guild's operations have really changed the power balance in the world of One Piece, prompting targeted attacks on Marines. Even civilians have considered going after Marine soldiers to claim the rewards, which has shaken the morale of the Marines.

While the high bounties assigned to certain figures might not always reflect the strength of an individual power, it definitely shows how important they are. In any case, this has made people even more excited for Akainu's return to the battlefield.
