My Hero Academia is steadily approaching its final chapter and has just concluded Spinner's character arc by revealing why he was so devoted to Shigaraki. Although the entirety of chapter 427 was about Spinner and Deku, Spinner's speech also established that Shigaraki was another normal person who liked to play video games.

However, the dialogue changes from the fan translations to the official translations, mentioning Shigaraki's fondness for video games, might have ruined Spinner's most important moment in the story, according to many fans.

Disclaimer- This contains huge spoilers for the My Hero Academia series.

My Hero Academia ruins Spinner's emotional moment

Chapter 427 was inarguably one of the most emotional and heartfelt chapters in the entire series. The chapter focused primarily on Spinner and the causes that established the friendship between him and Shigaraki.

It also explicitly mentioned how Shigaraki liked to play video games and that he was Spinner's first friend ever. All of Spinner's inner emotions and their depiction makes the conflict between the heroes a morally gray area.

However, amidst all that, many fans feel that the stark difference between the tones of the official and fan translations essentially ruined one of the most important moments of Spinner's speech. Spinner's speech also intended to reveal that Shigaraki was a normal human who enjoyed doing normal things like playing video games.

In the fan translations, the exact sentence used was "He loved playing video games," which, according to most of the fandom, is a more appropriate way to reveal Shigaraki's more normal and human side.

But in the official translation, the line read "He was a gamer," which unintentionally referenced the countless memes of gamers being one of the most marginalized societal groups. A few fans have mentioned how the official translation is more likely to be made fun of and taken out of context because of its accidental reference to the "Gamers rise up" memes.

Some fans have also mentioned how this can be taken out of context, and Shigaraki's story could even morph into the story of an oppressed gamer who rose against society. This made the entire Shigaraki and Spinner situation humorous while it was supposed to have a serious tone.

The concerned panel is just a singular panel, and most of the other translations have maintained a tone of seriousness throughout the chapter. Chapter 428 will come out on July 21, 2024, and will be available on Shueisha's MANGAPlus platform for reading.
