The recent installments of the One Piece manga focused on Dr. Vegapunk's message to the world. Using the global broadcast of the scientist's speech as a narrative device, One Piece author Eiichiro Oda is progressively delving into the intricate lore of the series.
One of the greatest mysteries of the franchise is the Will of D., a particularly rare trait that results in some characters having the initial "D." in their names. The exact meaning of the D. remains unknown, but it was one of the major secrets that the Roger Pirates learned when they visited Laugh Tale.
As per the spoilers of One Piece chapter 1120, Vegapunk continues his message by mentioning that his old friend Clover also had "D." in his name. With Clover being one of the scholars who died during the World Government's attack on Ohara, the series once again emphasizes the ties between the Will of D. and the Void Century's truth.

The Will of D. drove Professor Clover to study the greatest mysteries of the One Piece world
A man thirsting for knowledge
Interested in the Void Century’s secrets from his youth, Clover explored the world to research this forbidden matter. During his travels, he befriended a young Dr. Vegapunk. The Navy arrested Clover in several occasions, leading him to gain notoriety as an infamous adventurer and archaeologist.
Eventually, Clover returned to his homeland, the island of Ohara, where he became the leader of the local intellectual community. The Ohara scholars were extremely committed to learning what truly happened during the timeframe of the Void Century.
Led by their intellectual curiosity and thirst for knowledge, Clovers and the others uncovered the events of this period, which are said to be the key to understanding the true history of the One Piece world. However, their research attracted the attention of the World Government.
Aiming to hide the truth, the tyrannical establishment had expressly forbidden anyone to research over the Void Century. Clover’s activities were considered particularly dangerous due to his ability to read the Poneglyphs, the stones on which the true history was carved.
A wise and caring man, Clover was very kind to Nico Robin when she was a child. He never marginalized her, unlike the other citizens of Ohara, and even encouraged her to study history and become an archaeologist. Unfortunately, all of this was brutally swept away by the World Government’s decision to punish Clover and the other scholars.
As the World Government issued a Buster Call on Ohara, the island’s fate was doomed. About 22 years before the present One Piece narration, the Five Elders sent the Marines to destroy Ohara and kill its inhabitants. Just before being murdered, Clover communicated with one of the Elders through a Radio Snail.
Clover claimed that humanity had the right to know the truth and began to tell how, before the establishment of the World Government, power was held by a certain kingdom. However, as Clover was about to reveal the name of this kingdom, he was murdered in cold blood.
One Piece chapter 1120 delves into Clover’s roots
The first scanlations of One Piece chapter 1120 left fans stunned by revealing that Clover was more than just a scholar. As the broadcast of Vegapunk’s message continues, the scientist dedicates part of his speech to recall his past meeting with Clover, which happened 26 years before the present One Piece narration.
Outside the entrance of the Punk Hazard laboratory, Clover asked Vegapunk to help him with the research as the world’s true history wasn’t meant to remain shrouded in darkness. However, Vegapunk refused, stating that he was too involved with the World Government to inquire into a banned topic such as the Void Century.
Without mincing words, Vegapunk added that the only reason Clover was still alive and free was because the World Government was keeping tabs on him and his mates to eliminate them at the right moment. Essentially, Clover had been able to escape the Marines only because they deliberately let him.
Still, Vegapunk couldn’t hide his shock when Clover mentioned that his brother carried the D. in his name and that he was killed just for this. Clover then revealed his true identity as Claíomh D. Clover and shouted at Vegapunk:
“How am I supposed to accept a world where you can die just for having the wrong name?!”
Nevertheless, Clover’s pleas failed to shake Vegapunk, who still refused to help. As the scientist was leaving, Clover yelled at him that he wouldn’t be able to ignore the voices of the past forever.
Clover and the legacy of the Will of D.
Clover’s conversation with Vegapunk emphasized that the former continued his research despite being well aware of the consequences of his actions. People who possess the initial D. are charismatic and self-confident. They believe in freedom, and, for the most part, don’t fear death. Clover may have not been a powerful fighter, but he was a determined man who accepted his fate selflessly.
It was stated that those with the D. in their names have a reputation for being the natural enemies of “gods”, i.e. the Celestial Dragons who run the World Government. This is also true in Clover’s case, considering that he did everything he could to find out and divulge the hideous truth behind the World Government’s facade.
Many One Piece characters died, leaving their dreams unfulfilled but entrusting them to future generations. Clover’s violent demise prevented him from continuing his activities, but his wisdom didn’t disappear. He inspired Nico Robin to become an archaeologist who seeks to learn the true history.
It can be no coincidence that two D. carriers, Jaguar D. Saul and Claíomh D. Clover, were on Ohara with Robin during the Buster Call. Clover nurtured Robin’s passion for history, and Saul put his life on the line to save the girl, allowing her to survive. Now, many years later, Robin will uncover the secrets of the Void Century with the help of her comrades thereby finishing Clover’s work.
Clover’s commitment to finding and exposing the truth also impacted Monkey D. Dragon. Shocked and disgusted by the Ohara Incident, Dragon created the Revolutionary Army to hinder and eventually overthrow the World Government.
Although it took a long time, Clover’s words also managed to move Vegapunk. When he heard what had happened to Clover and the Ohara scholars, the genius scientist couldn’t help but pay tribute to his late friend.
Moreover, Vegapunk decided to comply with the request of his friend, continuing his research and making it public. This led to Egghead becoming a sort of new Ohara but allowed Vegapunk to die at peace with himself, knowing that he had done the right thing.
