Introduced at the beginning of the One Piece story as the main character's childhood hero and role model, “Red Hair” Shanks is an icon of the franchise. Throughout the narration, Shanks rarely appears, but this has only added to his charismatic and charming aura.

Whenever One Piece focuses on Shanks, fans can enjoy moments of hype, including the foreshadowing of his world-famous rivalry with Dracule Mihawk, his arrival in Marineford, his confrontation with Whitebeard, and more.

Fans have always wanted to see Shanks fighting, and One Piece fulfilled their desire in episode 1112. Titled Clash! Shanks vs. Eustass Kid, One Piece episode 1112 had “Red Hair” finally revealing both his combat style and the extent of his insane strength.

Following the conclusion of the Onigashima Raid, the Kid Pirates left Wano and sailed to Elbaf to meet a certain “man marked by flames”. According to Eustass Kid and his right-hand man, Killer, this individual would be in possession of pivotal information about the One Piece treasure.

When Kid and the others reached Elbaf, they found out that the Red Hair Pirates were on the island as well. Kid decided to attack Shanks and his men, aiming to exact his revenge on them. Sometime before, Kid's group had suffered a terrible defeat at the hands of the Red Hair Pirates.

During that battle, Benn Beckman, the Red Hair Pirates' second-in-command, brutally maimed Kid, cutting off his left arm. Standing in front of the same crew once again, Kid thought it was time for his vengeance. Killer tried to warn him that, if they challenged the Red Hair Pirates again, this time he could lose more than an arm, but Kid ignored the advice.

Meanwhile, the Shanks, Benn, and the others left the center of Elbaf, where they were partying with Dorry and Brogy, as well as other Giants. Kid tried to approach them, but was surrounded by the ships of the Red Hair Fleet, a group of individuals loyal to Shanks, although much weaker than the full-fledged Red Hair Pirates.

The members of the Red Hair Fleet could only survive by using Shanks’ flag as a deterrent for aggressors. Nevertheless, they had the guts to tell Kid that he would have to deal with them if he ever wanted to see Shanks.

Annoyed, Kid decided to wipe out the Red Hair Fleet with his Damned Punk technique. He used his Devil Fruit powers to conjure a railgun, and began to charge it in order to fire an electromagnetic projectile. Once completed, the technique would have destroyed the Red Hair Fleet, killing all of its members.

Shanks noticed that Kid was about to do something, and used his Advanced Observation Haki to see ten seconds into the future. Upon realizing Kid’s wicked intentions, Shanks decided to act immediately. Before Kid could even finish charging the Damned Punk, Shanks jumped on the former’s ship, drew his sword Gryphon, and imbued it with Conqueror’s Haki.

He then unleashed a technique called Divine Departure. The attack, which consisted of a formidable Haki-enhanced slash, cut through Kid’s railgun. It then struck Kid, instantly knocking him unconscious. Killer, who had tried to protect Kid, suffered the same fate.

Overwhelmed by the sheer potency of Shanks’ Conqueror’s Haki, most of Kid’s other subordinates passed out. The rest begged Shanks for mercy, and tried to appease him by giving up their copies of the Poneglyph. However, Shanks ignored them, and jumped away from their ship.

Shortly after, Dorry and Brogy completely destroyed Kid’s ship by releasing a beam of compressed air. Helpless, Kid, Killer, and the others fell into the sea. As Kid and his comrades sank with their vessel, the narrator’s box announced the utter and definitive extermination of the Kid Pirates.

Shanks vs Kid powerscaling analysis

A prominent Supernova of the Worst Generation, Kid is a tough fighter with impressive endurance. He has evolved the powers of the Magnet-Magnet Fruit to the stage of Awakening, obtaining full control over magnetic forces. However, all of these assets were meaningless in front of Shanks’ overwhelming superiority.

In the previous arc, Kid and Law teamed up to fight Big Mom, eventually beating her by pushing her into the void. While this achievement remains impressive, it was influenced by Kid and Law's numerical superiority. The 2v1 set-up of the fight allowed them to attack Big Mom from her blindsides, accumulating their attacks over and over.

When alone against Shanks, a fighter much more competent than Big Mom, Kid stood no chance. This emphasized that the likes of Kid and Law have a long way to go before they can really compete with One Piece’s strongest characters in 1v1 battle.

This is no surprise, as Kid is severely lacking in Haki. He never displayed any notable feat with Observation or Armament, and despite being born with the Color of Conqueror's, can't use it to empower his attacks, unlike his fellow Worst Generation Supernovas, Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro.

To perform Damned Punk, Kid needs to create a railgun and charge it for at least ten seconds. During the fight with Big Mom, Kid was able to use Damned Punk because his opponent was busy with Law.

With no ally to distract his target, however, it would be hard for Kid to perform Damned Punk, which is a huge issue, considering that it's his strongest move. Shanks was able to attack and defeat Kid before he could even finish charging his technique.

It should be noted that Shanks didn’t just defeat Kid. He single-handedly annihilated him and Killer over the course of a few seconds, beating them with just one blow. This is telling of the insane strength of “Red Hair”, as he was able to oneshot two individuals tough enough to endure several attacks from Big Mom.

What’s even more impressive, Shanks did that by using a technique that is probably far from being the best move in his repertoire. A glimpse of his power was enough to annihilate a fighter of Kid’s caliber.

The attack that Shanks used to beat Kid is the same Divine Departure that Gol D. Roger used to perform long ago. Shanks learned this technique directly from Roger, which emphasizes the former’s connection with the legendary Pirate King.

Many years before One Piece’s present narration, Shanks was an apprentice to Roger. As such, he inherited the Pirate King’s signature move. Back in the day, Roger used this technique by swinging his sword Ace to unleash a Conqueror’s Haki-imbued slash. Nowadays, Shanks does the same with his sword Gryphon.

With this in mind, it’s safe to say that Shanks and Roger have a very similar fighting style, based on the usage of a cutlass combined with their all-powerful Haki. Even among the very few natural-born users of the Color of Conqueror, Shanks seems to be special, just like Roger.

The “Red Hair” is a true Haki master, who displays his exceptional potency every single time. After subduing Marine Admiral Ryokugyu, he defeated Kid with the utmost ease. During this fight, Shanks also revealed himself to be one of the few One Piece characters who can use the “Future Sight” ability, an advanced form of Observation Haki.

Users of this rare power can see a precise mental image of what will happen in the next few instants. In One Piece episode 1112, Shanks used this ability to see into the future for ten seconds, which is more than any other character ever displayed so far.

Kid’s recklessness backfired completely

A carefree and peaceful man who hates unnecessary conflict, Shanks refrains from using violence even when his honor is insulted. However, if someone threatens his friends or those under his protection, Shanks would have no qualms about fighting said individual, and even killing him.

If it’s to protect someone dear to him, Shanks would temporarily put aside his pacifist nature, and unleash his fury on the enemy, engaging him mercilessly. This is exactly what he did in One Piece episode 1112.

At first, Shanks probably didn’t want to crush Kid and his crew the way he did. However, when he realized that Kid was going to slaughter the Red Hair Fleet, he became furious, and decided that he simply couldn’t let that happen. The members of the Red Hair Fleet adored Shanks, and, despite being very weak, had tried to prove their loyalty to him.

Just as Kid showed them no mercy, Shanks did the same to the former, ruthlessly crushing him and his comrades. It was an epic moment, which emphasized Shanks’ incredible strength, as well as a defining trait of his character, while also raising the stakes for One Piece’s final saga.
