One Piece episode 1118 review: King Cobra comes face to face with the secret ruler of the world

One Piece episode 1118, titled The Holy Land in Tumult! Sai and Leo's Full-Power Blow!, was released in Japan on Sunday, September 8, 2024. In this episode, viewers follow Sabo's adventures in Mary Geoise during the Reverie. However, the highlight is Nefertari Cobra's shocking discovery of the empty throne during his conversation with the Five Elders.

In the last episode, viewers saw the start of the Reverie flashback, in which Sabo recounted the Revolutionary Army's invasion of Mary Geoise to Dragon and Ivankov. He made it clear that anyone who knew as much as he did would be putting themselves in a lot of danger.

In One Piece episode 1118, Sabo took down a bunch of guards inside Pangaea Castle and got the keys to the slaves' collars. He also met up with Bonney, who was also there to free Kuma. After that, she was supposed to visit Vegapunk and force him to restore Kuma's humanity. While they were hiding from the guards, they found out about a rumor that when a guard comes across the Lost Chamber, they are removed.

One Piece episode 1118 then cuts to King Cobra having a meeting with the Five Elders and speaking to them about the formation of the World Government 800 years ago by 20 monarchs who had moved to Mary Geoise and become the Celestial Dragons. To prevent the rise of a dictator among them, they installed an empty throne surrounded by their weapons as a symbol that no one would sit there.

Meanwhile, in the countries that lost their royal families, new monarchs were installed, and the original twenty royal families’ names were removed. However, Alabasta was a different case. Queen Lily of the Nefertari Family remained in the First Twenty but did not become a Celestial Dragon and returned to Alabasta. So, there are only 19 weapons around the empty throne.

Cobra, who had been reading up on the period following the Void Century, could not find any records of Lily because she never returned to Alabasta, and her younger brother ruled the country. Cobra wanted to know what had happened, but he was told there was no way of finding out.

He then asked about the meaning of D because of a letter left by Lily, which had been passed down through the Nefertari family. To everyone's surprise, Imu showed up at this point and took a seat at the Empty Throne after muttering Lily's name.

Meanwhile, in One Piece episode 1118, Kuma chained Shirahoshi under Charlos’ orders. Myosgard stopped her brothers from intervening, suggesting Leo and Sai handle it as they would not face the same consequences because they are pirates. While Charlos was distracted, Leo and Sai flattened him to the ground with one strike, and Morley emerged to restrain Kuma.

In One Piece episode 1118, although there is a lot of action, the plot takes precedence as three major events take place. Firstly, it is revealed that there is a Lost Chamber, which Sabo is shown piqued enough to find out about. Where this pursuit may lead him is something to look forward to, but it sure adds to the tension of the plot.

Secondly, it seems like a Celestial Dragon may have been killed. Those opposed to the nobles are increasingly getting fed up with their impunity and are ready to do whatever it takes to right the wrongs. If Charlos is really dead, people around the world will be in for a shock.

Finally, the episode shows that there is a ruler at the top of the World Government, a secret known only to the Five Elders and not even to other Celestial Dragons. This knowledge is sure to put Cobra's life in danger. Fans had hoped the anime would give away Imu's gender, which has been a topic of debate, before the manga, but their voice was distorted, leaving the question unresolved.

In the previous episode, it was revealed that the Revolutionary Army had successfully declared war on the Celestial Dragons, destroyed their food supplies, and liberated the slaves in Marie Geoise. Moreover, Sabo being wrongly accused of killing Cobra had turned him into a celebrated hero, inspiring uprisings in several kingdoms.

The episode then started an extended flashback showing the events at Mary Geoise, starting with the invasion by Revolutionary Army captains Karasu, Lindbergh, and Morley, along with Sabo. The Admirals were hindered in their ability to fight due to the presence of the Celestial Dragons. Meanwhile, Shirahoshi was in danger, and Vivi wanted to find help for her but was prevented by Lucci.

The episode ended with Cobra going to meet the Five Elders.
