With the release of One Piece Episode 1119 earlier this weekend, fans finally learnt the truth surrounding Nefertari Cobra’s death, as well as him and Vivi being part of the D. Clan. The episode also revealed more information about Nefertari D. Lily thanks to Imu speaking about her, doing so as if they knew her personally.
The One Piece Episode 1119 sees Imu imply this via their discussion of Lily’s mistake from 800 years prior in allowing the Poneglyphs to be unleashed onto the world. Imu then reveals that Cobra can confirm whether this was a mistake or not, prompting him to reveal her middle initial of D., in turn confirming her as Imu’s enemy. He says earlier to Cobra that D. is the name of their enemies.
Understandably, many fans are now confused in the wake of One Piece Episode 1119’s release, having previously believed that the Kozuki clan was responsible for making the Poneglyphs. Those under this impression are correct, as there’s a very simple explanation to what Imu meant when they said she allowed the Poneglyphs to be spread around the world.

Nefertari D. Lily revealed as playing a key role in series’ worldbuilding in One Piece Episode 1119
While Imu’s words in One Piece Episode 1119, his meaning is clear and can be very easily reconciled with the Kozuki clan creating the Poneglyphs. What Lily did was not physically create the Poneglyphs by etching into them, but instead spread them around the world before her death. This is why Imu references the fact that pirates use them to search for treasure; it’s not that she made them, but instead ensured their survival and spread across the seas.
It’s likewise confirmed that Lily did this intentionally via Imu’s words and the reveal of her having the initial D. in her name. This is further supported by the fact that Imu and the Gorosei, via the World Government, have made research on the Poneglyphs and Void Century a taboo. Essentially, they are trying to ensure that Lily’s intentional act of passing on the Poneglyphs, and presumably she will give the series’ themes, to the next generation is a failed plan.
One Piece Episode 1119’s reveal of Lily spreading the Poneglyphs is also easily reconciled with the previously stated information of the Kozuki clan creating the Poneglyphs. While the Kozuki clan was responsible for their creation and etching, Lily took up the responsibility of ensuring their survival by spreading them throughout the world. This may even be what she did after leaving Mariejois, possibly also explaining why she never made it back to Alabasta.
However, what’s still unknown even to manga readers is how Lily came to be in possession of the Kozuki clan’s Poneglyphs. There are several fan theories which exist, but those would go beyond both the scope of this article and provide spoilers beyond the anime’s latest episode. Likewise, they will not be discussed here.
Fans can rest assured, however, that series creator, author, and illustrator Eiichiro Oda will ensure that this mystery and many more are fully resolved in the final saga. Likewise, fans are already seeing some mysteries be resolved in the Egghead arc, with many more to come before its end.
