Following One Piece episode 1122’s release earlier this weekend, fans can’t help but ask themselves, “Is Monkey D. Garp alive?” given his ultimate fate on Hachinosu. Likewise, the issue offers no definitive answer on Garp’s status, simply saying that Garp was declared missing in action after successfully rescuing Koby.

Unfortunately, One Piece episode 1122 also suggested that fans won’t discover the ultimate answer for a while via the shift in focus back to Egghead Island. This shift likewise revealed the imminent arrival of Admiral Kizaru’s fleet, suggesting that this focus on the Straw Hat Pirates will be quite a long one full of action.

Thankfully, there is an answer to the question, “Is Monkey D. Garp alive,” even if it isn’t in One Piece episode 1122. In fact, fans know the full status of Garp in the manga currently, including whether or not he’s alive and where he is following his defeat at Kuzan’s hands. Follow along as this article fully breaks down everything the source material has told fans about Garp’s status.

One Piece episode 1122 sees Garp rescue Koby but at a significant cost

Following One Piece episode 1122’s events, Monkey D. Garp is alive and being held prisoner by Blackbeard at Hachinosu (Pirate Island). As suspected by many anime fans (and manga fans alike when chapter 1088 was first released), Kuzan’s attack didn’t necessarily kill Garp. It simply froze him, with Garp surviving upon being thawed later, as seen with Nico Robin of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Now, Garp is being held prisoner by Blackbeard as a potential bargaining chip in his negotiations with the World Government. This is suggested by Avalo Pizarro’s words when Blackbeard is discussing the events that happened at Hachinosu while he was away. While Koby had suspect value as a negotiation tool, given his SWORD membership status, Garp is famous enough to be much more valuable.

In this way, One Piece episode 1122 sees both Garp and Blackbeard win in a way. Blackbeard now has a much more valuable weapon to use against the World Government and Marines in negotiations. Garp, meanwhile, was able to save Koby from Hachinosu without losing anyone else in SWORD. Hibari was frozen by Kuzan, but the manga has also shown her to be alive and well later on.

While this is the suspected use Blackbeard will have for Garp, given Pizarro’s words and Marshall D. Teech’s current goals, there are other theories. Some assert that Blackbeard will give Garp over to the Cross Guild in order to collect on his massive bounty.

Others suggest that Kuzan will break Garp out and betray Blackbeard when the time is right, revealing himself as having been a SWORD member all along. It’s also possible that Blackbeard finds a use for Garp’s guise via Catarina Devon’s Devil Fruit powers.

This may allow Blackbeard to have his cake and eat it too. While using the real Garp in negotiation with the Marines and World Government, Catarina is sold as Garp to the Cross Guild and can escape after the transaction’s completion.

In summation

The answer to the question, “Is Monkey D. Garp alive?” is a resounding yes. The manga recently confirmed this in chapter 1126 by showing him imprisoned on Hachinosu Island. Dialogue from Kuzan and others also confirmed he was alive. While it’s unclear where his capture is going as a plot point, fans can expect it to play a significant role in the series’ final saga.
