Earlier this week, fans saw the latest alleged spoilers for One Piece’s upcoming chapter be released online by unofficial sources, bringing with them what appears to be the Egghead arc’s end. However, fans were more concerned with a feat that Emeth, also known as the Iron Giant or Ancient Robot, executed involving released Haki that Joy Boy had stored within him.

While some One Piece fans didn’t look too deeply into this, others have begun arguing over whether or not Luffy has been using Joy Boy’s Haki since Awakening his Devil Fruit in Wano. Although the manga hasn’t given any indication of an answer here as of this article’s writing, fans are nevertheless heavily debating the topic online.

One Piece’s latest spoilers cause a major controversy in the online fandom

In the latest spoilers for One Piece chapter 1122, it’s said that “Emeth uses a massive Haki attack that Joy Boy sealed on it in the past.” While the type of Haki used here isn’t specified, it’s presumably Conqueror’s Haki. This presumption is further supported by the fact that this attack from Emeth seemingly causes every Gorosei member, save for Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, to be sent back to their room in Mariejois.

While it is understandable that fans are focused on the act of storing Haki, many are more concerned with how this recontextualizes Luffy’s New World feats thus far than the act itself. Unsurprisingly, this has also led many to begin pushing their own agendas online regarding Luffy, asserting that he’s using Joy Boy’s Haki before this has been confirmed.

That being said, there are some prior moments in One Piece that could serve as evidence of this or foreshadowing for this reveal. The anime’s rendition of Luffy’s Gear 5 Awakening is a good example, seeing gold and black Haki clash as Luffy attains the form for the first time. Kaido’s comments shortly after further support this, seeing him not recognize this Haki despite having just fought Luffy and his Haki moments before.

However, this is far from confirmation that Luffy has been using Joy Boy’s Haki rather than his own, which is the conclusion many are pushing given this latest reveal. As mentioned above, the manga has in no way, shape, or form confirmed this to any degree as of this article’s writing.

Fans' reactions

As mentioned above, many in the One Piece fandom are trying to push the idea that Luffy has been using Joy Boy’s Haki this entire time as confirmed beyond any doubt. While this isn’t actually the case, it hasn’t stopped others from commenting on it in various forms:

“Y'all remember when Luffy's Haki ran out during his last defeat against Kaido. We were surprised by where he got this Haki from; it turned out to be the Conqueror's Haki of Joy Boy.😭😭😭😭,” posted one fan.
“So Luffy been using JoyBoy’s Haki all this time 😂,” claimed another.
“'Real one piece fans' gon have to explain this to us now, are we sure that Luffy is able to be in the top tier convos now?,” questioned a third.

Meanwhile, others are rushing to point out how nothing is truly known or confirmed yet, as well as pointing out the issues with the idea that Joy Boy stored his Haki in his own Devil Fruit:

“Haki is literally the counter for devil fruits, what sense make to you that a devil fruit has haki? Use ur brain please,” asserted one netizen.
“Kaido was just surprised cuz Luffy was dead, everyone else recognized Luffy’s Haki,” pointed out another.
“#ONEPIECE1122 anyone that actually thinks luffy has Joyboy haki is insanely slow
Joyboy would have to seal haki before he ate the devil fruit. And this isn’t proven so idk why people are acting slow on purpose..,” posted a third.

In any case, it’s clear that the matter of where Luffy’s Haki comes from when in his Gear 5 form will be a hotly debated topic in the community for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, this will likely only be exacerbated by the fact that a break for the series is looming. Hopefully, fans can get some clarification on the issue when the manga returns following the Obon holiday break week.
