One of the most beloved characters in author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga series is none other than Trafalgar D. Water Law, first introduced in the Sabaody Arc. Law has been a fan favorite ever since his introduction, to the point where Oda even had to replan what his role in the series would be, so it was proportionately significant to fans’ passion for him.

However, Law is also one of the most tragic characters in One Piece, with his possession of the Op-Op Fruit being a source of significant loss and strife in his life. Unfortunately, it seems that Law’s pain and suffering aren’t quite over yet, as recent moves in the manga have suggested that his life will come to a tragic end no matter what.

Disclaimer: This article contains spoilers from the manga.

Law will perform the Perpetual Youth Surgery by One Piece’s end, but on who is the question

Throughout One Piece, one aspect of Law’s abilities which was always highlighted above all others was the Perpetual Youth Surgery. This is a hidden ability of the Op-Op Fruit which allows the user to grant another person immortality at the cost of their own life. The technique was first brought up during the Dressrosa Arc by Donquixote Doflamingo, who also said the Op-Op Fruit was necessary to utilize a “secret treasure of Mariejois.”

Ever since then, it has essentially been a foregone conclusion that Law will use the surgery by the series’ end. Chekhov’s gun of Mariejois’ secret treasure is certainly evidence enough for this, but Law’s personal journey through the series further supports it. His main goal is to find the meaning behind the checkered lives that he and other D. Clan members live. He even shows an interest in Poneglyphs comparable to Nico Robin’s for this reason.

Likewise, One Piece fans have speculated that one of the likeliest scenarios where Law would perform the Perpetual Youth Surgery is using it to save Monkey D. Luffy’s life. The two were relatively close allies as far as pirates go, and Luffy is also a D. Clan member. Law may find meaning in his life by saving Luffy from death in the series’ final fight. This would also parallel Law’s adoptive father figure Donquixote “Corazon” Rosinante, sacrificing himself for Law’s sake.

It would also provide Law his answer in that he finds the meaning of his life in sacrificing it for the future, which would certainly qualify as a tragic fate, literarily speaking. It also provides a full circle moment to his origins; the boy who once lived when everyone else died must now die so everyone else can live. While certainly grim given the dark life Law has led, it would nevertheless be a narratively logical and fitting end.

However, there’s also a scenario where Law’s life ends without finding any meaning, which is certainly an option for his character. One option for this comes to mind in new Gorosei member Saint Garling Figarland. It’s still unknown how the group gets their immortality, so Garling may “steal” the immortality from Luffy if it’s the only way for him to obtain it. This would also explain why the World Government (via the Marines) pursued the Op-Op Fruit so seriously at one time.

While the above is speculative in terms of exactly how Law’s life comes to an end, it’s more likely than not that his conclusion will be a tragic one. The character’s life is riddled with darkness and loss, even as recently as his crushing defeat at Blackbeard’s hands. However it may come about, there’s little doubt that his final moments will be truly devastating to watch.
