Cunning and shrewd, “Cat Burglar” Nami is the female heroine of One Piece. Nami is the second person to join Monkey D. Luffy after his long-standing right-hand man Roronoa Zoro. The first woman to join Luffy, Nami's design resembles the young girl in Eiichiro Oda’s pre-One Piece sketch of three pirates – two boys and a girl – the same draft that Oda recreated for the One Piece manga’s first volume cover.
Nami plays a paramount role in the Straw Hat Pirates as the navigator of the crew. Her smartness and navigational skills make her absolutely irreplaceable. When it comes to fighting, Nami is not very powerful. But she’s far from being helpless, either. Lacking Devil Fruit, Haki, or remarkable physical capabilities, she relies on her wits and special weapons.
In particular, she uses her knowledge on weather to replicate meteorological phenomena through the Clima-Tact. In the latest issue of the One Piece manga, Nami used her Clima-Tact to defeat Road, the self-proclaimed Sun God of Elbaf, striking him with a formidable thunderbolt. Read on to learn everything about Nami’s signature weapon.

The Clima-Tact makes Nami the “Weather Witch” of One Piece
Nami went on the offensive in One Piece chapter 1129
A Giant who despised humans, Road created a diorama in which he kept the people captured by his beasts Muginn and Hilmungandr. He had them dressed in Viking-like outfits, much like those of the Elbaf Giants, and ruled over them as the self-proclaimed “Sun God”. However, when he tried to do the same with the Straw Hat Pirates, his twisted entertainment ended.
As Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, and Chopper fell asleep after sailing through a sleep-inducing mist, Road captured them, which proved to be a fatal mistake. The Straw Hats broke free, defeated Road’s beasts, and came face to face with Road himself. A brief flashback featured in One Piece chapter 1129 revealed that it was Nami in particular that Road had taken a liking to.
Funnily enough, the “Cat Burglar” was the very person who made him pay for his creepy actions. Nami used her Clima-Tact to electrocute the false Sun God with a tremendous thunderbolt. This scene only emphasized the effectiveness of Nami’s weapon, especially now that the power of Zeus, the lightning-based Homie who once served Big Mom, has been incorporated into it.
The origins of the Clima-Tact
Together with Usopp, Nami was the only “normal” human among the Straw Hat Pirates. The group included several skilled fighters with strong, well-trained bodies and a wide range of mighty powers. Over time, Nami and Usopp came to realize that they could not always rely on the help of their more powerful crewmates.
Aware of her limitations compared to her comrades, but driven by the desire to no longer be completely helpless, Nami asked Usopp to make her a weapon that would suit her abilities. Usopp thus provided Nami with the Clima-Tact, a staff that could be separated into three segments and used for a variety of effects.
At first, the Clima-Tact was almost useless in combat, as Usopp had mistakenly designed the tool to be used mainly for party tricks. Nevertheless, Nami managed to combine the item’s various properties to make it an effective weapon.
The Clima-Tact allowed Nami to create her own fighting style, based on the ability to simulate meteorological phenomena and manipulate the weather around her. During the Arabasta Arc, Nami used her weapon to fight against Miss Doublefinger, one of the most dangerous members of the Baroque Works.
The battle proved the validity of the Clima-Tact, so much so that after witnessing some of its properties, Miss Doublefinger wondered if Nami was a magician or a witch. For example, Nami performed a technique called Mirage Tempo to create an illusionary copy of herself by causing light to refract.
She also manipulated the temperature and humidity of air through Thunderbolt Tempo. Using this technique, Nami generated a cloud to unleash a powerful lightning bolt on her opponent. While these techniques were the result of Nami’s wits, the Tornado Tempo was an original creation of Usopp.
By activating this function, Nami could ensnare her target to blow them away with the tremendous centrifugal force created by the spinning of the Clima-Tact. Another interesting feature of the tool was its durability. Despite its thinness, the Clima-Tact was durable enough to withstand many attacks from Miss Doublefinger’s Spike-Spike Fruit.
Since then, the Clima-Tact has become Nami’s signature weapon. Over the course of the One Piece story, the Clima-Tact has been upgraded several times by the addition of better technologies and special properties. In particular, after the Straw Hat crew’s adventure in Skypiea, Usopp equipped it with a handful of Dials.
The Perfect Clima-Tact
This new version of the weapon, called Perfect Clima-Tact, debuted during the Enies Lobby Arc. The improvement was remarkable, allowing Nami to use newer weather-based moves or more powerful variations of her previous techniques.
The Mirage Tempo was evolved into the Mirage Tempo: Fata Morgana, an improved technique that allowed Nami to create multiple duplicates of herself. Each duplicate was different from the other, and all capable to match the movements of the real Nami.
With the upgraded Thunderbolt Tempo, Nami became able to attack multiple targets at once, striking them with large lightning bolts. She also developed Thunder Lance Tempo, a new finishing move. The power output of this technique was high enough to defeat CP9 member Kalifa.
The Sorcery Clima-Tact
Following the two-year timeskip, Nami has continued to increase the range, power, and versatility of her signature weapon. She incorporated Weatheria's technology into the Clima-Tact, making it the pinnacle of the meteorological science applied to combat.
Nami’s improvements include the ability to appear completely invisible when performing Mirage Tempo, and to fire a powerful gust of wind from the Clima-Tact. Furthermore, she evolved her previous Thunder Lance Tempo into the Storm Cloud Rod.
She also learned to perform Thunder Breed Tempo. With this technique, Nami created a massive thundercloud and controlled its lightning with the Clima-Tact to strike moving targets. Her new Clima-Tact also proved itself capable of creating heat, water, and, thanks to the addition of Milky Dials, even protective walls.
After the crew's reunion, Franky and Usopp made additional changes to Nami’s Clima-Tact, upgrading it even further. Usopp incorporated his Pop Greens into the item, granting it the ability to instantly grow and expand. Since then, Nami has been able to change the Clima-Tact’s size at will with a squeeze of the handle.
Nami’s current Clima-Tact with Zeus
During the Whole Cake Island Arc, Big Mom’s Homie Zeus became Nami’s servant. A cloud anthropomorphized by Big Mom’s Soul-Soul Fruit, Zeus is a particularly powerful Homie, being made from a fragment of Big Mom’s own soul. Zeus didn’t mind working for Nami, who pleased him by feeding him with thunderclouds.
Zeus stayed with Nami until Big Mom temporarily reclaimed him during the Onigashima Raid. Big Mom attempted to remove her soul fragment from him, but wasn’t able to do that as Zeus remained permanently fused to Nami’s Clima-Tact.
Named after the god of thunder in Ancient Greek mythology, Zeus has given both the Clima-Tact and Nami as a whole a massive boost in combat effectiveness. Above all, Zeus has made Nami’s lightning-based attacks dramatically more powerful than before.
When Nami first manipulated Zeus to work for her, filling him with thunder clouds and controlling them inside him to strike Big Mom with a thunderbolt, the result was a ravaging blast. The attack opened a crater in the ground, and was so powerful that Big Mom's eldest son Charlotte Perospero assumed that it was the work of Big Mom herself.
Zeus could freely manipulate the Clima-Tact's shape without Nami’s input. He could turn it into more dangerous forms, such as a spiked mace, and control its movements. Additionally, Zeus could enhance the thunderclouds that Nami created with the Clima-Tact, and even directed the resulting attacks to hit their targets.
Thanks to Zeus, Nami unleashed a lightning technique strong enough to instantly defeat Ulti, an elite fighter in Kaido’s crew. To be fair, Ulti was already badly damaged before, having received a crippling blow from Big Mom herself. Nevertheless, it proves that Nami can now at least take on fighters of Ulti’s level with a reasonable chance of winning.
How strong is Nami now in One Piece?
In One Piece, weapons are only as good as their users. Roronoa Zoro’s Enma or Dracule Mihawk’s Yoru wouldn’t be nearly as effective as they are if put into the hands of an average fighter. In fact, an average fighter wouldn’t even be able to use them properly, lacking the necessary Haki, physical strength, and dexterity.
The case of Nami’s Clima-Tact, however, is totally different. After incorporating Zeus, the Clima-Tact has become a sentient weapon that can fight on his own. This means that Nami can unleash some of Big Mom’s insane power without having to worry about controlling it. When push will comes to shove, Zeus will do it all himself.
In addition to make Nami’s attacks far stronger than before, Zeus can even guide and redirect them, making it extremely difficult for the opponent to dodge. Granted, the “Cat Burglar” has remarkable attacking power at her disposal, but lacks speed, physical strength, durability, and endurance.
She also can’t use Haki, let alone any advanced form of it. Essentially, Nami is a glass cannon. Nevertheless, her fighting style is one of the most unique in One Piece. It fits perfectly with her navigator role and meteorological skills, making her seem like a witch who uses spells to control the weather.
Nami is the main female character of One Piece, as well as one of the three original members of the protagonist group, along with the highly popular Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro. With this in mind, fans can only hope that One Piece author Eiichiro Oda will dedicate her the attention she deserves.
