One Piece has a lot of theories in the fandom because of its ever-expanding world-building. A fan on X, @writingpanini, recently came up with a new theory involving the D. Clan. It basically suggests that the members of the D. Clan are the true descendants of the Gods and not the Celestial Dragons, with the history that the latter claim to be a fabricated lie.
This theory has an interesting angle because the Celestial Dragons, and the World Government as a whole, have proven to be notorious liars in the One Piece universe and have hidden a lot of information from the world. Therefore, it wouldn't be so out of the left field that they also lied about their claim of being "holy figures" and that the D. Clan are the true descendants of the Gods. This could also explain the latter's will "to change the world."

Explaining how the D. Clan could be the true descendants of God in One Piece
The theory on X suggests that the people who made the World Government centuries ago, the 20 royal families, defeated Joy Boy and his friends. This led to the creation of the lie that the Celestial Dragons were the descendants of the Gods. However, the truth could be that the D. Clan are the true descendants, which could also explain their almost divine ability to influence the world.
Corazon told Trafalgar D. Law that the D. Clan members are the "enemies of god" and the World Government has the Holy Knights, further emphasizing their religious and divine image. However, it is a common element in religion, particularly Christianity, that demonic or evil entities pretend to be angelic or divine to tempt and deceive humanity.
There is the precedent in the Wano arc through King, a Lunarian who was pushed away from his land because of the World Government. It is also shown through the Bartholomew Kuma flashbacks in the Egghead arc that there are people and races like the Buccaneer who have a religion. This could connect the D. Clan to the true Gods, thus explaining why the World Government chose to eradicate them.
The ramifications of this theory
This theory could mean a lot for the One Piece universe because it could explain why members of the D. Clan are spread worldwide and could develop the concept of the Gods in the series. There is a chance that there might be no real Gods in this universe but there are other races these characters descend from, which is something that fits with Eiichiro Oda's writing style.
Furthermore, it could give Oda the chance to dwell on the motivations of the World Government, particularly when it comes to Imu. The series has yet to explain the origins of the conflict between Imu and Joy Boy, which is very likely to be rooted in what this theory is covering.
Final thoughts
The idea that the D. Clan are the true descendants of the Gods could have a lot of interesting consequences in the One Piece universe. Furthermore, this could explain a lot of major plot points in the story, especially when it comes to Imu and the World Government.
