One Piece fans have long theorized that the Elbaf arc is going to be key for the character of Usopp and is finally going to give him the relevance he deserves, which is why some people on Reddit have come up with the theory that he is going to get a Devil Fruit. The biggest issue is that Usopp getting one is something that may come up in the story, although this theory at least makes thematically fitting for his character.

A common pattern among Usopp's biggest battles in One Piece has been that he has faced women, such as Miss Merry Christmas, Perona, and Sugar. Now, it could be likely that his next big battle would be against another woman on Elbaf and could set him up for somyhing big, most likely eating a Devil Fruit, mirroring what he went through against Sugar during the events of the Dressrosa arc.

Explaining how Usopp could get a Devil Fruit at Elbaf in One Piece

This theory on Reddit suggests that Elbaf is not only going to be a key arc for Usopp's development by giving him a Devil Fruit but also by having him go up against a powerful fighter. It has been a running pattern in the series that he fights women with strong abilities that are hard to counter, such as Miss Merry Christmas in Alabasta, Perona in Thriller Bark, and Sugar in Dressrosa.

Regarding Sugar, Usopp ate by accident a spicy grape called Tatababasco, whose reaction resulted in his opponent fainting because of fear. Some people on Reddit have theorized that he is going to face a powerful enemy and is going to have to eat something yet again but this time is going to be a Devil Fruit, thus giving him a boost in power and a chance to save either the Straw Hats or the Giants of Elbaf.

As mentioned earlier, there could be an issue in giving Usopp a Devil Fruit this late in the story, although the Elbaf arc might be the one exception where this is doable. The land of the Giants has been linked with Usopp for a long time, so this is the perfect moment for him to grow stronger.

The need for Usopp to shine in Elbaf

There is no denying that Usopp is beloved by the vast majority of the One Piece fandom but it is also quite clear in that community that his character has lacked development since the time skip. He always had a clear trajectory in learning to be brave and adapt to a lot of crazy circumstances but the time-skip version of his character struggled to maintain that form.

Usopp has been trapped in a loop of being scared and then being brave for one second, which has become inconsistent throughout the years. In that regard, Elbaf seems like the last opportunity for his character to shine, especially when it comes to getting a power-up to challenge the members of the Gorosei or the Blackbeard Pirates.

Final thoughts

Usopp is likely going to have a major role in the Elbaf arc, which is something that most One Piece fans want. In that regard, the opportunity of getting a Devil Fruit could be key for him moving forward in the story.
