Sanji is one of the strongest characters in One Piece, but despite that, he is counted as one of the weak ones due to various reasons. His degenerate personality plays a big role in this as he is willing to abandon his dreams in exchange for just spending some time with girls.

But a bigger contributing factor to this issue could be how he refuses to fight ladies, just like what happened during his most misunderstood moment in the Wano arc against Black Maria. Even though he could have defeated Black Maria very easily, he still called for Robin from hell.

On one hand, this does fit his character as someone who would never hurt a woman. On the other hand, Robin's intervention in this case makes it perfect as she is aware of Sanji's self-sacrificing personality. From the start of the series, Sanji is never afraid of offering himself in exchange for his friends, and Robin knows about this, making her entry the perfect compliment to the scene.

Why Sanji's self-sacrificing character makes his most misunderstood moment in One Piece a perfect compliment to his character?

Vinsmoke Sanji is the fourth born of the Vinsmoke Family whose body didn't modify even after his father tried to change it using genetic engineering. So, after he was born, he was secluded from his siblings as a failure. Fortunately, Sanji's sister, Reiju, helped him escape the Germa Kingdom in hopes of finding some kind friends.

After escaping the Germa Kingdom, Sanji landed in the hands of the infamous pirate Zeff, who sacrificed his leg so that Sanji could have something to eat. This was a key moment for Sanji as this scene affected his personality deeply and he developed a self-sacrificing personality.

During the Skypiea arc of One Piece, he came in front of Enel's attack to save Nami and Usopp from getting electrocuted. After Kuma made a sudden arrival to the Thriller Bark Island, Sanji told Zoro to step aside and let him sacrifice himself. During the Wano arc, fearing that his Germa suit might take over him, Sanji asked Zoro to kill him if he went berserk.

Even during Whole Cake Island of One Piece, when Sanji belittled his whole crew and asked them to leave. He was sacrificing himself to marry someone he never liked, hoping that this could help Luffy reach the One Piece. Luffy's words sum up his character aptly as Sanji was only harming himself by hurting his loved ones, and his crewmates.

The Thriller Bark incident where Zoro sacrificed himself was kept a secret from Luffy but Robin knew about everything. She even knew about Sanji's will to do the same for the captain.

So now, let's talk about the most controversial and misunderstood scene of Sanji during the Wano arc. While exploring the brothel of Wano Kingdom, Sanji was caught by Black Maria who kept beating the Straw Hat Pirate but he didn't say a word. Suddenly, he called out to Nico Robin, astonishing the girls present there.

Robin appeared instantly and thanked Sanji for relying on her. While this scene might sting some fans as Sanji's cowardness, it is actually the opposite. His rule to never hurt a woman is on one side, but Robin's effort to help him plays a bigger part.

Robin is aware of Sanji's self-sacrificing character, which is the reason why she appeared before Sanji sacrificed himself for nothing. She even claimed he was worthy of becoming one of the songs of the future pirate king because she knew about the Thriller Bark incident where Sanji and Zoro strived to bore Luffy's pain.
