Earlier this week, fans saw the latest spoilers for the upcoming official release of author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling One Piece manga being leaked via reputable sources. These spoilers likewise highlighted some incredibly shocking and exciting developments from the issue, the most significant of which is Jewelry Bonney finally using her Devil Fruit’s true powers.
This allows her to utilize her Toshi-Toshi no Mi fruit to transform herself into what is essentially a clone of Sun God Nika, with her appearance directly matching Luffy’s Gear 5 form. While fans didn’t get a taste of her powers and abilities in this form from the issue, it does tease an exciting and action-packed conclusion to the Egghead arc.
However, this latest development in One Piece also represents something of a misstep for the World Government, who’ve seemingly created their own worst enemy in Bonney. While some fans may be confused as to why this is the case, the series thankfully explicitly highlights the World Government’s role in Bonney attaining these powers.
World Government’s latest blunder is the costliest in One Piece yet
In One Piece chapter 1103, Gorosei member Saint Jaygarcia Saturn tells a captive Bonney that he is the one who gave her Devil Fruit powers. He reveals they conducted an experiment on a baby by giving them a Fruit’s power without having them eat it directly, achieved via an extract being administered.
He tells her that it was a success but calls it an unnecessary Fruit. This is because Toshi-Toshi no Mi’s powers rely on the user envisioning certain futures and transforming based on them. However, this also means the Fruit becomes much less effective as one’s knowledge of reality grows and their dreams of the future likewise become much narrower and more restricted.
Saturn also mentioned just before this explanation that Bonney wasn’t able to call upon the powers of Nika because she hadn’t recognized Luffy as Nika yet. Flash forward to One Piece’s latest spoilers, and fans see Bonney fully utilizing her Fruit’s abilities to become what is essentially a clone of Sun God Nika. In other words, Bonney has overcome the alleged fatal flaw of the purportedly “useless” Devil Fruit which Saturn gave her as a child.
In turn, the World Government has essentially created its own worst enemy via Saturn’s experiments on Bonney. This is emphasized by how fearful they were of Luffy and his Devil Fruit awakening, which is what gave him access to Gear 5 and in turn allowed him to become Sun God Nika. While one Nika to deal with was already a big enough problem, the World Government has given themselves a second Nika to fight against, albeit unintentionally.
That being said, this development is exciting even beyond the fact that the World Government has played itself in a truly hilarious way. More specifically, Saturn also confirmed to Bonney that he performed experiments on his mother, which directly led to both her and Bonney having Sapphire Scale. In other words, Saturn is also directly responsible for Ginny’s death, and indirectly for Kuma’s since he sacrificed himself to save Bonney from the disease.
Likewise, the World Government has not only created a powerful enemy for them, who they are fearful of but has also given this new enemy a reason to truly despise them. It’s a twistedly funny moment of just desserts in One Piece, and makes what’s likely to be the final, climactic fight of the Egghead arc even more dramatic and enthralling.
