The cover of One Piece volume 109 is a heartwarming piece of art

Vegapunk, Sentomaru, and Kizaru do the Nika dance as Kuma and Bonney laugh together

With the official release of One Piece volume 109 being set in about three weeks, the franchise's official account on X has already anticipated what the cover of the installment will look like. There's also a video showing Eiichiro Oda's work on the project, from the initial sketch to the final realization, including the mangaka's discarded ideas for the cover.

Based on the video, it seems that Oda initially wanted to draw Bartholomew Kuma and a crying Jewelry Bonney running away, chased by Five Elders member Saint Jaygarcia Saturn. However, the author dismissed the idea in favor of a more reassuring scene.

The cover of One Piece volume 109 depicts a young Kuma smiling as he holds a child Jewelry Bonney in his arms. Bonney is hugging her adoptive father while laughing out loud. In front of them are Dr. Vegapunk and his bodyguard Sentomaru, as well as Marine Admiral Borsalino "Kizaru."

Vegapunk, Sentomaru, and even Kizaru smile as they perform the signature Nika dance. Behind them, the Egghead employees do the same. CP0 agent Stussy, the clone of Miss Buckingham Stussy, looks at the scene with a smile on her face. Egghead's futuristic environment rises in the background under a pink, partly cloudy sky.

On top of all, the drawing shows Monkey D. Luffy unleashing his Gear 5 transformation, which turns him into the legendary "Sun God" Nika. Just like Nika used to bring laughter and freedom to the oppressed, Luffy seems to dispel the clouds, symbolically bringing the sun's light.

The name of the One Piece franchise is written in pale orange. With its light, gentle colors, the cover of One Piece volume 109 conveys a nostalgic and soft sensation. Such a mood perfectly fits the contents of the installment, which features Kuma's last moments as a human before becoming a mindless cyborg at the World Government's service.

Kuma accepted this terrible fate as part of a deal he made with Saint Saturn to save Bonney's life. In his final moments before losing his human consciousness, Kuma was at peace, knowing that his sacrifice had preserved Bonney, the beloved memento of Ginny.

Just before the surgery was completed, Vegapunk and the others broke into tears, while Kuma's entire life flashed before his eyes. Retracing his existence, Kuma saw the faces of his loved ones.

This scene hits especially hard as One Piece volume 109 will also show the present events, with Kuma arriving on Egghead just in time to save Bonney from Saturn's evil clutches. For an unexpected as well as sad reunion of old acquaintances, Vegapunk, Sentomaru, and Kizaru are also present on the island.
