Picking up where the previous installment of the anime left off, One Piece episode 1118 will continue to focus on Sabo’s flashback about the events of the Levely. Titled The Holy Land in Tumult! Sai and Leo's Full-Power Blow!, the episode sheds some light on a particular event that happened while the Revolutionary Army’s Sabo, Morley, Karasy, and Lindbergh were carrying out their mission in the Holy Land of Mary Geoise.
As Saint Charlos makes another attempt to capture Shirahoshi, Sai and Leo step in to protect the Mermaid Princess from the wretched Celestial Dragon. The two members of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet brutally attack Charlos, saving Shirahoshi. While their intervention was decisive, another character played a major role in the incident.
Despite being a Celestial Dragon just like Saint Charlos, Saint Donquixote Mjosgard didn’t hesitate to act in support of Sai, Leo, and Shirahoshi in One Piece episode 1118.
While Mjosgard’s behavior may seem incomprehensible, his honorable actions stem from a past encounter that completely changed his worldview.
One Piece episode 1118 emphasizes Donquixote Mjosgard as one of the few good-hearted Celestial Dragons
What did Mjosgard do in the latest One Piece episode?
A despicable man even for the standard of Celestial Dragons, Saint Charlos had already tried to kidnap Shirahoshi before the beginning of the Levely. Sai and Leo tried to intervene to help the young mermaid, but were easily stopped by CP0 agent Rob Lucci.
Luckily, another Celestial Dragon, Saint Donquixote Mjosgard, stopped Charlos by striking him in the face.
However, the wicked Charlos decided to try again. On the fourth day of the Levely, Charlos made his move, assisted by Bartholomew Kuma, now reduced to a mindless cyborg and enslaved by the Celestial Dragons.
Charlos ordered Kuma to capture and tie up Shirahoshi, which the cyborg did, much to the former’s sadistic amusement.
With everyone else too pretending to not have seen the scene, Shirahoshi’s elder brothers, Fukaboshi, Ryuboshi, and Manboshi rushed in to save her sister.
Claiming that as a Celestial Dragon he could do whatever he wanted with Fish-Men and Merfolks, Charlos ordered Kuma to crush Fukaboshi and the others.
The Pacifista-like Kuma targeted them with a powerful laser blast, which they barely dodged. Immediately after, Sai and Leo arrived on the scene along with Saint Mjosgard, who told Fukaboshi to step aside.
Mjosgard explained to Fukaboshi that he couldn’t attack Charlos as people with royal blood like him were easily identifiable, and their homelands could be punished for their actions.
Instead, pirates like Sai and Leo could escape with little concern for the consequences of their deeds, as they were already outlaws. Remembering what happened earlier, Charlos ordered Kuma to kill Mjosgard.
Moments after, however, Sai and Leo attacked Charlos, striking him simultaneously.
The combined blow from the two literally crushed Charlos, leaving his face disfigured and his body flattened. The people around, including Saint Rosward, started panicking over the possibility that someone killed a Celestial Dragon.
With Kuma about to blow up Sai and Leo, the Revolutionary Army officer Morley saved the day.
Using his Devil Fruit powers to appear from the ground below Kuma, Morley grabbed the latter and left with him. As such, he accomplished one of the Revolutionary Army’s main goals, i.e., the rescue of the group’s former member Bartholomew Kuma.
Meanwhile, Mjosgard facilitated Sai and Leo’s escape from Mary Geoise.
With Sai and Leo’s quick getaway, the perpetrators of the attack on Charlos remained unidentified. The World Government thus labeled the event as the attempted murder of a Celestial Dragon by unknown assailants.
The reason for Mjosgard’s behavior
With his actions, Saint Mjosgard not only protected Shirahoshi's life, but also prevented a future conflict between the Fish-Man race and the World Government, which would have ruined the peace painstakingly obtained over many years.
Mjosgard’s deeds, which even included laying hands on a fellow Celestial Dragon, are extremely surprising. However, there was a time when he felt entitled to look down on anyone who wasn’t a noble, and believed that it was only fair for him to do what he wanted from inferior people, not unlike Charlos and the others.
Ten years before the present One Piece narration, Mjosgard went to Fish-Man Island to recapture some slaves that his family had lost.
Unfortunately for Mjosgard, his ship was attacked by sea creatures, and crashed on Fish-Man Island. Surrounded by his former slaves, who wanted to kill him, Mjosgard was saved by the Ryugu Kingdom's Queen Otohime.
At first, Mjosgard disregarded Otohime’s words about ending the cycle of hatred between Fish-Men and humans. Even though she had him healed, he was about to leave Fish-Man Island without even thanking her.
To the shock and disapproval of her family, disgusted by Mjosgard’s wickedness, Otohime decided to leave with him in order to go to the surface and prove that human and Fish-Men could co-exist.
Eventually, Mjosgard was moved by Otohime’s kindness and compassion, and developed a debt of gratitude to her. One week after her departure, Otohime returned to her homeland with a written document from the World Government.
The paper, which Otohime had obtained thanks to Mjosgard’s help, guaranteed the Fish-Men the freedom to migrate to the surface of the One Piece world.
Thanks to Otohime, Mjosgard had a complete change of heart, becoming a much better person. He understood how absurd his worldview was, and began to see himself as nothing more and nothing less than a humble human being, a notion otherwise unthinkable for a tyrannical Celestial Dragon.
Sadly, a few years later, Otohime was killed by Hody Jones, a Fish-Man who despised her philosophy, and wanted to instead rekindle the hatred between humans and Fish-Men. Even in her final moments, however, Otohime didn’t renege on her commendable kindness, as she did not express hatred towards her murderer, and pleaded for her sons to do the same.
Out of respect for Otohime, Mjosgard became a supporter of her dream to clear racism by promoving integration and interspecies harmony. When he met Otohime’s sons during the Levely, he did all he could to protect them, to the point where he openly assalted a fellow Celestial Dragon, and later took full responsability for the incident.
By saving Shirahoshi from being enslaved by Charlos, and preventing Fukaboshi, Ryuboshi, and Manboshi from personally intervening against the same despicable individual, Mjosgard kept Otohime’s dream safe.
Had Fukaboshi and the others hit Charlos, given their status as members of the Ryugu Kindom’s royal family, the fate of the entire Fish-Man Island would have been sealed.
The World Government would have sent the Holy Knights or some elite CP0 agents to destroy the country. Instead, Mjosgard insisted that the attack on Charlos was carried out by lawless pirates such as Sai and Leo from the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.
With his touching tale of redemption, Saint Mjosgard is, just like Saint Donquixote Homing and his son Rosinante, the exception that proves the rule.
Apart from these three, in fact, the Celestial Dragons appear to be the most villainous people in One Piece, truly embodying the banality of evil.
