Oshi no Ko season 2 finally made its premiere on July 3, 2024. Although the key visuals and illustrations released beforehand managed to increase the overall hype around season 2, many fans still had reservations about it due to the impact of season 1's opening, Idol by YOASOBI.
Season 1's opening, Idol, inarguably became popular to a point that no one predicted. Given that it received numerous awards and maintained its standing in the charts for a long time, fans expected season 2's opening to be better than season one's or at least comparable.
Season 2's opening, Fatale by GEMN, has now managed to divide the fandom, with fans arguing over whether this opening is an improvement upon the previous one.

Oshi no Ko season 2 opening has divided the fandom
Oshi no Ko season 1 opening ended up becoming popular to the point that the song Idol itself became more well-known than the anime. It was performed by YOASOBI and their rising popularity contributed toward the distinct identity that the opening theme got.
Along with winning the most played song of 2023 Spotify award in Japan, it also won numerous other awards including Crunchyroll's Best Anime Song 2024 award. Given Idol's popularity and success, Oshi No Ko season 2's opening was very much anticipated by the fans. The season 2 opening song is performed by GEMN and is named Fatale.
Although the new opening has already managed to carve out a dedicated fanbase for itself, many other fans have realized that the success of season one's opening track cannot be easily replicated.
Fan reaction to the Oshi no Ko season 2 opening
Few fans have mentioned how it is too difficult to recreate the success of Idol from season 1, but the season 2 opening song is still a really good one on its own. Some fans even mentioned how the visuals of the opening sequence are on the next level compared to the previous one, and this opening might just be a contender for the best anime opening of this year.
On the other hand, some fans took this opportunity to mention how Idol's impression and impact were too strong and the new opening just isn't enough to replace or become a successor to the previous season's track.
"Visually wise it's very good but the song itself doesn't do it for me. Idol was just too strong to follow up. Same with the ending," one fan said.
"I like the first song better but this is awesome and the visuals are way better, also their mom in the crowd at the end made me tear up," shared another fan.
Another fan took this opportunity to mention how the season 1 opening had a really catchy and mind-blowing song while having rather decent visuals attached to it. The Oshi no Ko season 2 opening, on the other hand, has a decent song with catchy visuals, signifying Studio Doga Kobo's effort at balancing both seasons.
"This OP has insane visuals, decent song. Meanwhile OP1 had an insane song, but decent visuals. Douga Koubo DOES NOT miss," another fan said.
Some fans also mentioned how the visuals and effects of the new opening are on an entirely new level compared to the season 1 opening, but the overall song is not as impressive as that of season 1.
"Nah, the visuals are fantastic but the song is nowhere near as good as the first one," one fan wrote.
"the song is absolutely dismal, the visuals tho they are good," one fan shared.
Oshi no Ko season 2 episode 1 just aired and has already gained praise from fans. Although season 1 also started off strong, its popularity started dwindling towards the latter episodes. Likely, such a thing won't happen again, especially since the current arc is highly regarded by manga readers.
