Saturday, June 29, 2024, a rumor began circulating that Chainsaw Man mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Goodbye, Eri one-shot could be receiving an anime film adaptation. The rumor, which comes from X (formerly Twitter) user and reputable general anime and manga news source @MangaMoguraRE (Mogura), is based on the registration of a new website domain.

Per Mogura’s post on this Goodbye, Eri rumor, the domain is “Eri-Movie dot com” and is said to look “legit,” as well as making sense with the “Name Server” for the site. Mogura stresses that nothing is confirmed and that it’s just their speculation at this point, but they advise keeping an eye on the next potential film from the Chainsaw Man mangaka nonetheless.

Goodbye, Eri film could be piggybacking off of Look Back, Chainsaw Man adaptations’ successes

While Mogura clearly and obviously caveats the information as a rumor and speculation, it would make sense for another anime film adaptation to come from the Chainsaw Man mangaka. The Look Back anime film recently premiered in Japanese theaters and is already receiving rave reviews from critics and the general public alike. With this in mind, the timing of the apparent domain registration for the Goodbye, Eri film’s website makes even more sense.

Fujimoto’s original one-shot is also incredibly highly praised, with the relationship between the titular girl Eri, and protagonist Yuta Ito being a common highpoint for many fans. The overall story and cinematic construction of the manga itself and its panels have also been heavily praised. In turn, this cinematic construction would naturally lend itself to a film adaptation, lending further credence to the above rumor from Mogura.

The Look Back one-shot is also very similarly constructed in terms of paneling, layout, and overall perspective. Likewise, given the Look Back film’s incredible success in its opening weeks in Japanese theaters, it makes even more sense that another of Fujimoto’s cinematic mangas would be adapted into a film. However, this is all speculative as of this article’s writing, with no current confirmed information beyond the website mentioned above domain registration.

Fujimoto’s Goodbye, Eri one-shot manga was first released on the Shonen Jump+ website/platform in April 2022. The manga was later published in print in Japan in July 2022, followed by an English release of the manga in June 2023. The one-shot had garnered over 2.2 million views on the Shonen Jump+ website within a single day of its initial release.

Fujimoto’s flagship Chainsaw Man manga series began serializing in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in December 2018, running until its first part’s conclusion in December 2020. The manga then returned with its currently ongoing second part in July 2022 and also moved to the Shonen Jump+ platform for the second part’s publication.
