Ranma 1/2 anime is based on the manga series, written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi. The author launched the manga in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday, where it was serialized from 1986 to 1997, with 38 tankobon volumes published.

The manga inspired a television anime series by Studio DEEN in 1989. However, due to low ratings, the show was canceled after airing 18 episodes. Eventually, the series was renewed by the same studio, and it ran for 161 episodes, from 1989 to 1992.

The narrative for the anime revolves around a teenager, named Ranma Saotome, who has been training martial arts since childhood. One day, he accidentally falls into a cursed spring. As a result, Ranma gets cursed to become a girl when splashed with cold water.

Interestingly, he can only turn into a boy when exposed to hot water. Things get further complicated when he learns that his father has arranged his marriage. As such, the anime showcases Ranma's adventures, as he seeks to get rid of his curse.
