With the release of Dandadan Episode 8, the anime finally began the adaptation for the Serpo Arc. Just as it began, fans were introduced to the Loch Ness Monster-inspired creature called Nessie. While animation studio Science Saru has adapted the manga directly into the anime until now, Dandadan Episode 8 saw them get a bit creative with Nessie's introduction scene.
This is because, the animation studio did not just animate the manga panels into anime, but took a step further and made a reference to the Shin Godzilla movie. This homage made the scene perfect as it left the fans of the movie happy and also helped improve Nessie's introductory scene.
How did Dandadan Episode 8 get inspired by Shin Godzilla?
As fans may remember, while Nessie's introductory scene was menacing in the manga, it had next to no build-up. Momo Ayase was shown hiding from the creature. Right after, the creature launched its High-Compression Water Blast attack, leveling the surrounding classrooms to rubble.
The reason it even worked well in the manga is due to the element of surprise. While fans were expecting the creature to be dangerous, its sheer firepower was unexpected to fans.
Meanwhile, Science Saru took this scene up a notch in Dandadan episode 8 by directly taking inspiration from the critically acclaimed 2016 Japanese kaiju film, Shin Godzilla. Instead, of launching its High-Compression Water Blast instantly, Nessie was shown absorbing water to fire the blast.
The scene was directly inspired by the Shin Godzilla movie scene where the kaiju is shown powering up its attack before burning the surrounding landscape to cinders.
How fans reacted to the Shin Godzilla inspiration
Most fans were amazed by Science Saru for taking inspiration from the 2016 Shin Godzilla movie. Thus, they praised the anime and expressed their love for the staff who were making such extra efforts to pay homage to the works that came before itself.
"Close enough welcome back Godzilla," one fan said.
"Love the Shin Godzilla homage in the new Dandadan," another added.
"dandadan turned the loch ness monster into a giant shin godzilla reference I love this series," another fan said.
"I also just love how they use this ost here whenever a spirit gets to show off their abilities, pretty eerie stuff," other fan said.
Meanwhile, others were impressed by the anime for having turned the Loch Ness Monster "Nessie" into a giant Shin Godzilla reference. While they already loved the series, such a reference only made them love the series even more.
As for other fans, they loved the OST Science Saru used whenever a spirit is shown displaying their abilities. Such an addition made the scenes especially eerie and fun to watch. Overall, Science Saru's reference to Shin Godzilla in Dandadan Episode 8 worked perfectly.
