Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary sparked considerable interest when its anime adaptation was announced in January 2024. The buzz in the air was apparent given that the series came from Honobu Yonezawa, the creator of the popular series Hyouka.
The anime is to adapt Yonezawa's original novel of the same name. The series kicked off in December 2004 and has released five total volumes as of April 2024. It also had its first two novels adapted into a manga series, which was published in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy Magazine.

Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary so far
Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary has released its first three anime episodes, with Lapin Track going above and beyond to make this anime a visual treat. Using light and shadows to establish mood, tone, and time of day is quite fulfilling.
As mentioned, dialogue drives the story, and the direction has been top-notch so far. The studio took an intriguing approach by uniquely designing the characters' eyes. Overall, the animation is impressive, smooth, and polished.
Story-wise, Jogoro Kobato has solved the three cases that came his way — the stolen pochette, how Kengo Dojima prepared hot cocoa with minimal vessel use, and the case of the rigged vase. From this, we gather that he possesses an incredibly erudite and sharp side with a keen eye for detective work.
Meanwhile, Yuki Osanai remained shrouded in mystery until episode 3. Till then, she was shown to be quite polite, soft-spoken, and calm. Like Jogoro, she wanted to lead an "ordinary" life. But then viewers are teased with something sinister that hides behind her gentle face, bent on taking revenge for the wrong done to her.
What to expect from Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary season 1
As far as the first three episodes are concerned, audiences have seen the two sides of Jogoro. One side shows him as a high schooler attempting to fit into society and lead a normal, while the other is a sharper, snarkier, brattier, and erudite side, sporting a smiling facade.
On the flip side, Yuki's character is slowly coming to light. Everyone can see something dark lurking under the sweet face. There is reason to believe that she is twisted and cunning in some way, like a wolf. This can be backed up by how her hand forms a wolf head during the opening theme.
Season 1 should delve deeper into each of Jogoro and Yuki's characters and why they want to lead a normal life. It will do so through regular incidents that are portrayed with the seriousness of a whodunit. Overall, it promises to be a visually staggering and intellectually intriguing watch.
