Ryomen Sukuna's past stands as one of the great mysteries of the ultra-popular Jujutsu Kaisen. Reigning during the Heian Era, the Demon King was tipped to be the strongest sorcerer to exist and the mere mention of his name struck fear into the hearts of anyone. This was not just a title, as the Shinjuku Showdown was a testament to his might.

But what fans were eager to see was never really revealed and then the series ended - the backstory of the King of Curses. However, when looking closely at the manga's concluding events, the Jujutsu Kaisen finale might have brought forth how deep Sukuna's past really is. Here's a closer look.

Chapter 271 seems to hold the key to information regarding Sukuna's past. From his words, it is evident that his origins are deeper than what creator Gege Akutami made them out to be. Towards the latter half of the chapter, we see Sukuna have a brief word with Mahito, wherein he admits defeat and expresses a desire to walk a different path if given the chance. This is where the reference to Sukuna's past is.

As seen in the chapter, aside from the choice he made for his life, Sukuna had 2 other choices - Yorozu and Uraume. Following his loss during the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, he wishes to walk a different path, i.e., Uraume, whom he is shown walking away with. But the question arises: why Uraume and not Yorozu? The answer is simple: Uraume was the one who needed him, not Yorozu.

To elaborate, Uraume was a child in need of a mentor and a guardian. It is probable that, like Sukuna, they too were cast aside. This backs up the reason for them being so loyal to the Demon King. Moreover, Sukuna likely was the only one not to shun Uraume, for however, they were during the Heian Era. He welcomed them, unconcerned about their oddities, as he was an unwanted child himself.

Moving forward, Yuji speaks about how individuals are born harbouring Curses and the monster one becomes is dependent on luck. In his case, he had his grandfather, Wasuke, to help him. The way he developed is why he offered Sukuna a second chance, to coexist with him. But Sukuna found it unacceptable, being a Curse and no less the King.

As for Yorozu, she was different from Uraume, i.e., she loved Sukuna deeply and wanted to show him true companionship. Her desire was to ease his solitude and bring him love. But that was not what he sought, rather he chose the lost and persecuted child. From their interactions, Uraume was the only Sukuna ever seemingly cared about and looked for.

That is who the Demon King picked between the two. Uraume was whom he was willing to walk a different path for. As he mentions himself when revealing Yuji and Kenjaku's relationship, Sukuna himself is an unwanted child. So it can be stated that he did not want Uraume to experience what he did as a young lad and hence took them under his wing till the very end.

Final Thoughts

Sukuna's past is an intriguing aspect that was left unexplored. His character was masterfully written and will likely go down as one of animanga's greatest villains. However, possibly something akin to Gojo's Past Arc being given to the King of Curses would have added another layer to his character that could have made it all the more impactful.

But even so, this is just speculation and opinions woven together, formed from what was seen in chapter 271 of Jujutsu Kaisen. Sukuna's past has been largely unexplored and will forever be a mystery that keeps fans hooked on the smallest of details revealed by Akutami. This could change if the mangaka decides on a spin-off focusing on Sukuna's past and how he became the King of Curses. But till then, only theories can be formulated.
