Boruto and Boruto: Two Blue Vortex have steadily developed Sumire Kakei's character. In the first part, she seemed to be a supporting figure in the story with a promise for greater things. She was also one of the first threats (Nue) the new generation faced. Now, after the story has considerably progressed, Sumire's true role looks to be gradually stepping into the spotlight.
Her contribution to the Leaf Village’s scientific advancements and her close ties to key players such as Boruto Uzumaki and Sarada Uchiha always teased a deeper purpose. But till such time, her actual purpose was shrouded in ambiguity. However, the most recent Two Blue Vortex chapter suggests that Sumire’s journey is finally heading to a pivotal point.
Chapter 16 showcased a noticeable and impactful change in Sumire’s calm demeanor. With the looming threat of the Shinju and the Leaf unaware of Boruto's reasons, Sumire's character could be heading toward a major turning point in the series.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex could finally be shaping Sumire's true role in the series
Before delving in, chapter 6 of Two Blue Vortex needs to be mentioned. This was when Boruto arrived at the Leaf and spoke to Sarada Uchiha and Sumire Kakei. However, this interaction is unique and fuels the theory about Sumire. Fans will be able to note that the Uzumaki boy approaches the two girls in very different ways.
Beginning with Sumire, he seems to take an on-guard stance, only briefly glancing at her. After that, he doesn't even look at her as he speaks, giving her only the side-eye. Further, there is no smile or small talk, just a quick greeting. In contrast, he appears more relaxed as he turns to Sarada, immediately delving into their prior interaction (where she hugs him).
For this instance, many might reason that he is closer to Sarada than Sumire, the former being his teammate. But subsequent chapters reveal that Boruto knows about future events, and his behavior towards Sumire would hint at her potential role. In chapter 13, Kashin Koji mentions the “worst possible futures” with visions that include Sumire.
This could be an indication that Sumire has the potential to play a key role in an alternate timeline, maybe a heroic or even a villainous one. This perfectly explains Boruto's cautious approach when he met her, as he knew what she might become. Moreover, it is possible that he stayed at arm's length, believing that if he did so, the potential future of Sumire might be avoided.
In truth, this could be the series shaping her for her true role. It wouldn't be out of the blue if she went to the dark side initially. Sumire’s past with Nue is not unfamiliar to anyone, and her ties to Amado make her a prime candidate for a complex arc. If Kashin Koji envisioned something like this, viewers might see Sumire grapple with her choices and even face the Leaf Village.
But then again, the events of chapter 16 speak otherwise. The chapter witnesses Sumire voice her feelings for Boruto. It also showcases her displeasure with how Sarada greeted him (hug). Additionally, Sarada was curious to know his reasons rather than allow him to do what he needed to. Also, Sumire's reaction underscored a significant change in her — from quiet and shy to unafraid to voice her opinion.
Hence, chapter 16 opposes the hint that Sumire could turn to the dark side again. So, if not a villain, Sumire could become someone who chooses to side with and fight alongside Boruto openly and understand the gravity of staying uninformed for the time being.
Final thoughts
Two Blue Vortex chapter 16 brought a ton of information and major developments in the story. It featured the Uzumaki boy crafting his Flying Thunder God Technique, Sarada and Sumire's interaction with Eida, Shikamaru being briefed by Koji, and the Leaf and Sand gearing up to fight Matsuri and Ryu.
But the crux of this feature is Sumire. Her character is finally brought forth from the background and is a treat to witness. Sumire isn't very complex but holds immense potential for a complicated and compelling character arc. Moreover, now her feelings and the current situation give her further reason to act and possibly impact the story in a meaningful way.
