Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online season 2 episode 1 was released on October 5, 2024. The sequel is the continuation of Sword Art Online's spin-off series, which focuses on guns rather than swords. The spin-off anime series returned after almost six years, and the biggest update it received was a change of studios from Studio 3Hz to A-1 Pictures.

Being one of the highly reputed studios in Japan, A-1 Pictures elevated the series (specifically the character designs that looked more vibrant) even though a majority of the staff members were the same as the prequel. While the premiere episode didn't feature any action, the episode quality promised action-packed scenes in the future.

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online season 2 episode 1 review: Bright character designs with decent animation quality

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online season 2 episode 1 dived immediately into the plotline of the sequel, instead of giving a runback of the prequel, giving the true fans an enjoyable time on the premiere. However, the episode gave a rundown of the prequel's highlight, the Second Squad Jam, through the premiere of the sequel.

The animation quality of the sequel might be hard to judge because it was just the first episode and lacked any action. However, the motion of characters and a preview of the Gun Gale Online at the start of the episode was enough to promise good things in the future.

Surprisingly, even though the majority of the staff members were exactly the same as in the prequel, some changes could be noticed in the sequel's premiere episode with the spotlight being on the character designs. While most of the character designs were more vibrant than in the prequel, Pito's design appeared more mature in the sequel.

The animation was also decent enough for the premiere episode and the rest will be determined in future episodes when LLENN's team fights against other teams in the Third Squad Jam of Gun Gale Online. The ending theme song was also another pleasing experience, which was an aesthetic video symbolizing the relationship between LLENN and Pito.

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online season 2 episode 1 review: The sequel might focus more on LLENN x Pito than the prequel

The prequel of Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online entirely focused on the Gun Game and the character development of LLENN as she proved her worth as the "Pink Devil." LLENN's journey led her to challenge Pito in a one-on-one battle, which was fulfilled in the Second Squad Jam.

The way the sequel began indicated that the Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online season 2 might focus more on the relationship between Pito and LLENN as they partnered for the Third Squad Impact. This was also indicated through the ending theme song's video, which showcased the romance between LLENN and Pito.

The prequel was more centered around the gun action in Gun Gale Online but the sequel could focus more on the character development of the protagonists, as indicated by the progression in the premiere episode.

Final thoughts

As already mentioned, the sequel promises a good future with an action-packed episode with the transfer of production to A-1 Pictures from Studio 3Hz. A-1 Pictures is behind big animation projects like Solo Leveling and others, hinting that the Sword Art Online sequel would not disappoint animation-wise.

As far as the plotline of the series is concerned, it is advised to take the comments of this article with a huge grain of salt as everything mentioned here is based on the premiere episode. So, the sequel could match the character development with the gun action.
