Chainsaw Man chapter 178 was a much-anticipated release following the events of the previous chapter and it did not disappoint. Rather, this chapter might just dictate the potential path on which the rest of the story will proceed. After suffering considerable damage from Yoru's newfound strength, the Hero of Hell finds himself in a fix.
Previously looking for blood, he did not get much time to escape as Yoru's Gun Gauntlets proved too powerful. Now, Chainsaw Man lay in a heap, unable to continue and faced with an offer that will potentially decide the fate of the world. This offer has been presented to him by the Aging Devil and could lead to us seeing the Death Devil a lot sooner than expected.

Aging Devil's disturbing proffer in Chainsaw Man chapter 178 could fulfill the prophecy sooner than expected
Chainsaw Man chapter 178 was another brilliant release by creator Fujimoto. Following a very brief lull in the story, the author delivered something special and what could potentially decide the fate of the remaining story. To be specific, Aging Devil's offer to the Hero of Hell is a dark one and could fulfill the story's prophecy sooner than expected.
It is worth understanding the prophecy first. The prophecy was first spoken of by Hirofumi Yoshida in chapter 122 when he had a word with the Famine Devil or Fami. It might have been tough to notice initially, but Fujimoto's series is set in 1999.
As Yoshida reveals, the prophecy stemmed from an urban legend based on a prophecy by French astrologer Nostradamus - "In the seventh month of 1999, a Great King of Terror will descend".
To tie it into the story, the coming of the Death Devil has been likened to the descent of a "Great King of Terror". She is the eldest sister and the last of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalpyse and has been mentioned only in passing during the series. Thus, the Death Devil will arrive on Earth to put an end to all of humanity.
Now, in chapter 178, Aging Devil offers Chainsaw Man an easy way out against Yoru, i.e., to consume it and regain his strength, thus wiping out aging in the process. This is where an emerging theory comes in to explain the prophecy being fulfilled earlier than expected.
If consumed, the Aging Devil being wiped out will remove the concept of Aging. Thus, things, food in particular, will grow but not age and mature and reach the stage to be consumed.
Such a phenomenon will lead to a Famine across the world and in turn, there will be disease and death. Needless to say, chaos will reign soon enough. Another issue will also arise - no new life.
To elaborate, for a baby to be born, it must age and mature in the womb before entering the world. With Aging itself not a concept anymore, there will be no new life. All in all, there will be famine, war, conflict, disease, death, and a dwindling population.
Amidst this, the Death Devil will descend upon the last of humanity to bring an end to it all. It would be rather fitting too - stable Control the world boasted slowly killed it, War was what appeared from that void and Famine stepped in for the people of the world.
Finally, Death will descend upon the world to make things right again. In this process, humanity will suffer a major blow while a new era of Devils will rise.
