One of the most exciting weekly shonen series currently releasing is author and illustrator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man manga, currently in the middle of what’s seemingly its Part 2 climax. Beyond the incredibly exciting and revelatory ongoing events, what supports this is the fact that Part 2 has reached a similar number of chapters as Part 1 did for its climax.
In turn, fans are understandably looking ahead to discuss and ponder what the Chainsaw Man manga’s future could be following Part 2’s conclusion. While some are asserting that this may be the end of the series, it seems more likely than not that a third part of the story is coming for a few obvious reasons.
Chainsaw Man manga will have a Part 3, and how much more story there is to tell after Part 2’s climax is the key
As mentioned above, ongoing events in the Chainsaw Man manga are indicative of Part 2 having reached its climax. The fact that it has nearly the same amount of chapters as Part 1 did when proceeding through the climax only supports this theory. Inherently, this suggests that Part 2 could be approaching its end, assuming Fujimoto is consistent in how long he makes each of his manga’s parts.
However, there’s also the fact that there’s still so much story left to tell beyond what time will remain in Part 2 if the currently ongoing events are indeed its climax. One of the most significant specifically is the arrival of the Death Devil, with several in-series months still standing between contemporary events and the Death Devil’s arrival in July 1999. Even if a timeskip takes place in the final stages of Part 2, it’s unlikely that it will fully conclude this storyline before its end.
There are also many other aspects of the Chainsaw Man manga’s events within Part 2 that must be explored. For example, even in chapter 176, new lore and worldbuilding concepts are introduced via the reveal that War Devil Yoru is technically the mother of Gun and Tank. Such a concept and how this comes about needs to be fully explored, if meant practically. If meant symbolically, it should be shown how Yoru became close enough with them to call them her children.
The ultimate fate of Control Devil Nayuta also needs to be addressed, especially with the chapters showing her decapitated head and seeing a mole on her face missing. While this could be a mistake on Fujimoto’s part, it’s one that happened in two different chapters, making this seem unlikely. As a result, it seems that there’s more of Nayuta’s story to tell, possibly revealing her to be alive after all.
Many other plotlines, such as the Fire Devil, why the Aging Devil wants to make a deal with Public Safety, and more, need to be dealt with in addition to the Death Devil. This is simply too much for the Chainsaw Man manga to satisfactorily wrap up with the time that appears to be remaining in the series’ second part.
One literary reason why there likely will be a Part 3 to Fujimoto’s manga stems from the fact that the story is mainly a character-driven one. Typically speaking, trilogies work extremely well within the context of telling a character-driven narrative. The hero’s journey, also known as the monomyth, is especially conducive to and indicative of this, with Denji’s journey across the full series paralleling the hero’s journey.
One final major reason why the Chainsaw Man manga will have a Part 3 stems from both the fact that the Death Devil is coming, and how much this arrival has been built up. It seems unlikely that a satisfying payoff for such a central and thrilling plotline could play out in what time seemingly remains in Part 2. This seems especially true with how many conflicting forces are preparatively moving against Death, such as Public Safety and the Chainsaw Man Church.
Final thoughts
With all of this in mind, it seems likely that Fujimoto’s manga series will have a Part 3 beyond Part 2’s conclusion, which is likely to occur by this time next year. While it’s extremely possible that Part 3 could be the series’ ultimate end, it’s more likely than not that a third saga at least is on the way.
