The Elusive Samurai episode 2 review
CloverWorks studios delivered another animated masterpiece with The Elusive Samurai on July 13, 2024. While it was disappointing for fans as they couldn't get a chance to see Tokiyuki compete in a training regime with Ayako and Koshiro, this episode shines light on his lack of martial arts talent. Seeing Tokiyuki utilize his evasive tactics against Muneshige will excite any shonen and action fan.
Moreover, it's great that the trio defeated Muneshige using proper strategies and teamwork. Having Ayako and Koshiro support Tokiyuki during the fight was a brilliant move.
However, seeing Tokiyuki develop his martial arts skills over time would be beneficial for the story as he is the person who has to reclaim control over Japan from Ashikaga Takauji. The team behind the story should dedicate an episode or two to someone teaching the young samurai useful swordsman skills.
Aside from that, the animation in the second episode carried weight. It could be easily shown from Muneshige’s devil-like appearance through a field of smoke to Tokiyuki grieving Kunitoki’s execution. Viewers admired this episode’s meaningful and intense sequences.
All in all, the episode was another wonderful showcase from The Elusive Samurai. In the next episodes, the audience can look forward to seeing where Tokiyuki’s endeavors with Yorishige and his new companions lead him next.
The Elusive Samurai episode 2 recap
On their journey to Shinano, Tokiyuki, Yorishige, Shizuku, Ayako, and Kojiro sought refuge in an abandoned house due to the heavily guarded city exits. As Tokiyuki slept, Yorishige kept watch over him and attempted to kiss him on the cheek. However, Tokiyuki evaded the gesture by leaping onto a beam, surprising the others. Tokiyuki voiced his concerns about their ability to leave Kamakura, but Shizuku reassured him that they could pass once the guards left.
Through the windows, Tokiyuki noticed the standards of former Hojo clan subordinates and realized that Takauji's kindness was merely a facade. This revelation planted doubts in his mind about the trustworthiness of their current allies.
Tokiyuki then questioned Yorishige's belief in his ability to seek revenge. In a ruined village, they overheard a conversation revealing Kunitoki's death, who had been betrayed by Godaiin to the Nitta clan. Overwhelmed by despair and mistrust, Tokiyuki vomited.
Yorishige used holy light to calm Tokiyuki, stating that he foresaw Godaiin surrounded by soldiers. He urged Tokiyuki to avenge Kunitoki as the first step towards reclaiming his country. Meanwhile, Godaiin, seeking recognition, decided to target Tokiyuki.
Upon meeting Tokiyuki on a hill, Godaiin suggested they leave Kamakura together. Tokiyuki confronted him about his betrayal of Kunitoki as Ayako and Kojiro attacked, but Godaiin defended himself. Godaiin criticized Tokiyuki’s hesitation, emphasizing his skills over status.
Yorishige instructed Ayako and Kojiro to observe Tokiyuki’s dodging abilities, noting his enjoyment in evading Godaiin's attacks. Recognizing Tokiyuki's potential in battle, they agreed to serve him. Yorishige advised them to fight without defending Tokiyuki, who skillfully evaded Godaiin. Ayako and Kojiro then struck Godaiin and held him down as Tokiyuki beheaded him, seeking to honor his brother, father, and the people of Kamakura.
