Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 264 was released on July 29, 2024, and the chapter featured Yuji's domain expansion but didn't give any details about its working and nature. However, the fandom is assured that the protagonist could now be able to take down Sukuna but this plan could take place in a roundabout way, which the fandom is not expecting.
Malevolent Shrine is a domain expansion in which the King of Curses can slash the whole world in the technique the fandom termed as world-cutting dismantle. Similarly, as Itadori's cursed technique is not at the same level as the antagonist, he could dismantle a much smaller object, more specifically the body of a person to slash their soul into two parts, thus freeing Megumi from Sukuna.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Why Yuji's Domain Expansion might be the Only Way to free Megumi
After Sukuna defeats Hana and Aoi, Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 264 shifts focus to Itadori. He tracks Sukuna, attacks him unexpectedly by smashing him into a building, and then initiates his domain expansion.
Sukuna, having regained his reverse-cursed technique, knows that Yuji's Shrine can only affect the link between souls, not the whole world like his own. The chapter ends with both being transported into Yuji's domain, which is a train station.
Yuji and Sukuna have the same cursed technique, Shrine. This allows its user to slash others, be they living or non-living, being one of the simplest yet lethal cursed techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen. The only differentiation between their cursed techniques is that Yuji's is a bit immature considering how it awakened just a few chapters ago.
On the other hand, Ryomen Sukuna has mastered his cursed technique and knows everything about it. So, how could this difference affect the protagonist's domain expansion when compared to Ryomen's Sukuna?
Sukuna's domain expansion, Malevolent Shrine, is one of the strongest and most unique domains in the show. The antagonist's domain is bound to no boundary and is expanded around nearly 200 meters from the antagonist, slashing everything within its vicinity. So, compared to this, how would Yuji's domain function?
The protagonist's domain having properties like being restricted and having a less effective slashing ability are all fair, considering how the protagonist's domain is not as potent as Sukuna's. However, the main difference between their domains could be their targets.
Sukuna's 'world-slashing dismantle' targets the entire world and generates a huge slash enough to kill the strongest one, just like how he chopped Gojo Satoru in the battle of the strongest.
Yuji's domain expansion can target and slash an individual's soul into two pieces. Since Sukuna is inhabiting Megumi's soul, Yuji aims to weaken their connection. He talks to Megumi, who has lost hope, and plans to use his domain expansion to cut the link between Sukuna and Megumi. This could either instantly kill Sukuna by removing his vessel or reduce him back to just twenty fingers.
