One Piece is filled with wordplay, as most of the fandom, especially the manga followers, might have already noticed. Be it the wordplay hinting at references from mythological sources like the origins of Imu or references to old anime series like Space Battleship Yamato, the series is filled with wordplay that showcases the author's love for media in general.

However, another kind of wordplay in the series is one that parallels English words, with a prime example being Laugh Tale (first known as Laugh Tale). However, a bigger wordplay might hint at Luffy becoming the next Pirate King due to his obsession with freedom and how this word relates to Laugh Tale, where the final treasure rests.

One Piece has all sorts of wordplay, which is most utilized by the manga fandom as they relate different chapters to each other as a way of deciphering information given out by the author. As the anime series doesn't follow the same pattern (but still follows the same pattern), fans are more into discovering the lore outside the series' given clues.

However, some of these clues, much rather clarifications, were given out in the movies. One prime example is the real spelling of Raffel, which was revealed in the One Piece Stampede movie when Luffy destroyed the Log Pose that revealed the coordinates to this island. As seen in the anime film, the title of the island was 'Laugh Tale.'

It fitted well with the overall theme of the final island too because when Roger and his crew reached the final treasure, they laughed (hence Laugh Tale). However, there are some other wordplay hints that exist in the series, one of which links Luffy to becoming the Pirate King.

Luffy is obsessed with freedom, which the series has countlessly emphasized through the protagonist's actions to help slaves and nations that dictators overthrow. This obsession with freedom might be what would tie him with the final Treasure Island Laugh tale.

Just like Luffy, Roger was also obsessed with freedom, and when he saw what the final treasure had to offer, the first emotion that came out of him was pure and honest laughter. It could also be because of Roger's honesty, another emotion he shared with the Straw Hat Pirate captain.

With the overall theme of the series being freedom and the show being named One Piece (the same as the final treasure), Luffy might be destined for the final treasure. Moreover, he also might be the only pirate who would achieve the title of the pirate king after his ancestors, as indicated by the wordplay in the series.

Analysis and Final Thoughts

It's no doubt that wordplay plays a key role in the lore development and plot progression of the series, given how the author never fails to leave behind clues related to the finale of his magnum opus.

This article utilizes a simple point and extends it to the finale of the series, which might look too far-fetched. However, given the importance of wordplay in the series, there's no telling what Oda might be planning, which might indicate that the final treasure might be closer than the fans think.
