Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is arguably the best isekai anime series that depicts its plotline with a degenerate protagonist who slowly learns the true meaning behind life and develops a family, thus becoming a better person than his previous life.
The inspiration behind such great stories doesn't come as a surprise, as a masterpiece is forged after reading a niche piece of fiction. The same has happened with this isekai series, as revealed in a recent interview.
The authors of Mushoku Tensei and Re: Monster recently sat down for an interview with Comic Natalie. The former revealed how the latter's series was crucial in developing his isekai series, which is now being praised worldwide. This reveal has taken fans by shock as they have started praising this niche isekai series whose anime adaptation is aiming for this Spring 2024 Anime Season.
The author of Mushoku Tensei reveals he picked up Re: Monster in its development stages and was inspired by the protagonist
On June 5, 2024, Kogitsune Karekiru, the author of Re: Monster, and Rifujin na Magonote, the author of Mushoku Tensei, were gathered for an interview. This was also the first time these two author met during an interview.
The interviewer started by first asking both of them how they started writing. Karekiru replied by saying at that time, the term 'isekai' wasn't that popular, as Re: Monster began its serialization in 2012, so having to go out of the way was an interesting approach to the author.
On the other hand, Rifujin na Magonote's story was a little different. The author picked up Re: Monster during its development stages and was inspired by the protagonist and the story in general. This gave Rifujin na Magonote the confidence to start his own light novel series, now known as one of the best isekai series in the media.
The interview also saw both authors claiming that they didn't know how to write, which was an expression of kindness from the legends. The authors also praised each other's works, light novels, and anime.
Rifujin na Magonote also revealed how his series was supposed to be more casual rather than action-centered, but he had to change it due to feedback from fans. The interview ended with Karekiru revealing the plot centerpoint of his future project, which will be centered around a "modern dungeon thing."
To some fans' surprise, Rifujin na Magonote has already paid homage to Re: Monster on X back in 2020. On April 28, 2020, a fan asked the author on his official X about the inspiration behind his masterpiece, to which the author revealed Re: Monster's influence on his work.
Reaction from fans on the greatness behind Re: Monster
The majority of the fandom was surprised after this revelation and called the inspiration behind Mushoku Tensei, the grandfather of the isekai genre. Some fans instantly added the series to their bucket list and said how they couldn't have witnessed their playful protagonist, Rudues, if Ogarou, the protagonist of Re: Monster, didn't exist.
"Re:Monster Great grandfather of Isekai," a fan said.
"Now, it makes me want to watch re:monster!" another one said
"It’s crazy we wouldn’t have Rudy without Orgeou," another fan said.
On the other hand, some fans shared their experience with Re: Monster, explaining why the series is so underrated. Fans criticized the series' protagonist for being a lustful beast, which was why most fans claimed he was the worst protagonist in print. This also led to one fan claiming that Re: Monster is nothing special, even though the series inspired one of the most iconic isekai series.
"Yeah i remember reading re monster when i was about to get into highschool. The only thing i remember is that it has a lot of s*x scene." a fan claimed.
"So Re:Monster is to blame for the worst MC in the history of printed media." another one said.
"Crazy how mauhoku tensei is actually has an amazing story crazy world building and amazing characters and re monster is quite mid" another fan aid.
Final thoughts
Whenever a plotline involves the themes of explicit content, it becomes a hit or miss. Most of the time, it is a miss in the eyes of the fandom, as most fans don't like it when explicit scenes pop out of nowhere while the plotline is progressing.
The same thing happened in Mushoku Tensei season 2 when Rudues got the 'disease,' Elinalise became a proper part of the plotline, meaning fans witnessed her satisfy her lust in every episode. This could be why Re: Monster is such an underrated anime series.
