After the episode got pushed back, The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse season 2 episode 5 premiered on November 10, 2024. Picking up where episode 4 left off, the annual memorial festival in Wolnack was in full swing, and everyone joined it before they headed out on the road in the morning.
Four Knights of the Apocalypse season 2 episode 5 proves that the heroes cannot catch a break. For every new town they find themselves in, something always disrupts their outings or tries to kill them.
In this case, it's the duo of Camelot knights Macduff and Teaninich and a demon. Wolnack's many back alleys and geography complicate matters further, thwarting everyone's coordination against the oncoming threats.
Four Knights of the Apocalypse season 2 episode 5 sees Wolnack become a battlefield
The memorial festival
As stated in Four Knights of the Apocalypse season 2 episode 4, Wolnack has an annual memorial festival. At this festival, people walk around with torches all night and pray for the souls of the dead to find peace. The entire town is out and about doing this, meaning the streets are crowded.
Four Knights of the Apocalypse season 2 episode 5 shows the heroes doing the same. Despite the looming threat of Macduff and Teaninich, the festival seems to go swimmingly for everyone. Those who didn't feel up to celebrating, like Gawain and Lancelot, almost turned in for the evening.
The heroes pray for their lost loved ones: Ann for her mother, Percival for his grandfather, Donnie for his mother, and others. It's a welcome peaceful moment that, much like all the other peaceful moments in the series, is quickly disrupted by losing Tristan in the crowd.
Chion and Isolde's paranoia about losing Tristan in the crowd, and the woman seducing him, soon proved justified. The woman coerced Tristan into following her into a deserted alley while reminiscing that a beautiful festival like this wouldn't be seen in her homeland. It doesn't take Tristan long to realize he'd been baited.
Three ambushes
Lancelot and Gawain had felt odd since night fell on the town. The reason was a large magical barrier that disrupted any magical detection abilities. When Gawain's Absolute Cancel magic destroys the barrier, even for a second, all hell breaks loose as everyone scrambles to find Tristan.
Tristan is caught off guard as the coercive woman reveals herself as a demon named Ioradio Velviger, sent by Camelot to slay Tristan and his allies. The fight is heavily weighted in Ioradio's favor at first. Tristan's Goddess Magic turns the tide, allowing him to draw blood with an X-shaped slash. Ioradio and Tristan speak about her motives for doing this.
Elsewhere, Jade, Isodle, and Ann search rabidly for Tristan. Isolde is inconsolable until Ann helps calm her down. They're interrupted by Teaninich's arrival. Teaninch's power, Summon Creature, allows her to control small animals. In the claustrophobic alleyways, venomous animals prove problematic.
Macduff ambushes Percival's group as they start trying to find Tristan. His brute strength is enough to make him a threat. But his magic allows him to block all sound from an area, cutting off all noise and leading to a unique fight where only the music is heard until he is driven off.
The Demon
Ioradio Velviger is a demon whose true form resembles a viscous slime, making her a tough fight for Tristan as he struggles to gain footing. So long as she maintains her magic, she jams all magical detection. Her and Tristan's battle is a slugfest between two powerful opponents.
Throughout the battle, Tristan tries to deduce Ioradio's motivations. His first deductions— that she has a grudge against anyone with Goddess magic, or that she bears ill will towards Meliodas for betraying the demons— are both emphatically stated to be wrong.
Although Tristan is kicked around for a while, he deduces Ioradio's motivation after healing his wounds with Goddess magic and landing an X-shaped slash on her chest. Tristan deduces, correctly, that the Holy War in the original Seven Deadly Sins claimed many demon lives, and that she's grieving for them.
Ioradio divulges that she was forced into doing Arthur's bidding and is in a Catch-22 situation: she will die if she fails to kill at least one of the Four Knights of the Apocalypse. Trying to flee is out of the question, as she'll die from her brainwashed demon friends outside of town.
She attacked Tristan to gauge his strength, finding him worthy and kind. She begged him to defeat Arthur and end her. Tristan refused to kill her, instead extending his hand to aid her, despite her warning him about her brainwashed friends. Tristan says his friends will take care of that, showing Gawain and Lancelot headed to them.
The Silent Knight
Macduff has been a patient enigma when compared to Teaninch. He's calm when she's angry, aloof when she's arrogant, and bides his time to ambush Percival's group, whereas Teaninch jumps the gun on hers. Percival, Nasiens, Donnie, and Chion all search for Tristan, with Chion needing a reminder that he can summon spirits to aid the search in his panic.
However, as he starts summoning one, all sound cuts out from their location. Nothing is audible from the sound of their voices to the dropping of a crystal. Macduff then makes his move, throwing around the group like ragdolls. Trying to run doesn't work, since they're liable to lead the violence into a crowd.
Macduff is tougher and faster than he looks, able to break Donnie's arm, kick Nasien's down, and block Chion's halberd, while punching him so hard he coughs up blood. Percival's Hope magic heals the group, but Macduff quickly goes behind him and snaps Percival's neck.
Donnie managed to fling Macduff out of the area using his Telekinesis magic. As the sound returned and the group argued, Percival revived himself using his magic much to Chion's shock. In a flashback to the Sistana arc, Donnie reminisces that Percival's Hope magic has brought him back to life before.
The Animal Summoner
Four Knights of the Apocalypse season 2 episode 4 showed that Teaninich is vain and arrogant. Four Knights of the Apocalypse season 2 episode 5 confirms that— when she corners Ann, Isodle, and Jade, she chastises Jade for supposedly ogling at her appearance and is arrogant enough to think she can kill them all.
Her magic, Summon Creature, proves hazardous for several reasons. The creatures she mainly summons are dangerous: snakes, bugs, and all manner of hazardous beasts in vast numbers in the confined space of Wolnack. A venomous snake incapacitates Isolde, and Ann's attempts to fight are met with multiple birds nearly pecking her eyes out.
Jade and Isodle fend off Teaninch with Jade's Darkness blinding her and Isolde's Lover's Mine. It's not enough to kill her, as Jade's magic only shrouded her in darkness and cut off her sight. She was still a capable predator as she could smell and hear, thanks to the animals she controlled. The Lover's Mine wounded her.
Trying to go against Percival's group doesn't work well for her. Percival, being a friend to all animals, allows Nasiens to get the upper hand on her and slash her twice with Enchant: Belladonna to incapacitate her, as Four Knights of the Apocalypse season 2 episode 5 ends.
Final thoughts
Four Knights of the Apocalypse season 2 episode 5 is three fights crammed into one episode. It makes good use of time to show off each antagonist and team combinations for the new group going forward. It also showcases that certain people are better matchups for others, as Teaninch was no match for Percival's group.
There are plenty of harrowing moments, including Ann's group vs. Teanich, Percival's temporary death against MacDuff, and the fight where the sound cuts out. Ioradio Velviger vs. Tristan ending with him choosing to trust her is likewise a nice change of pace.
Four Knights of the Apocalypse season 2 episode 5 shows that the environment is important. A lot of battles in the series up until this point have been open-air, open-environment battles, with plenty of room for heroes and villains alike to maneuver. This episode stacks the deck in the villains' favor heavily, showing that adaptability and improvision save lives.
