Among the many mysteries that One Piece has yet to explain, the Voice of All Things is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating. This is a rare trait that only a chosen few possess, and it allows them to communicate with animals and inanimate objects. Users can gain information from these without having to speak. The ability is rare, like the Will of D. or the Conqueror's Haki.

Voice of All Things users can interact telepathically with any being by sensing and understanding the voice inside them, thus becoming aware of their true emotions and thoughts. While the exact nature of this ability has never been specifically explained in One Piece, many fans have noted its similarities with Observation Haki.

Potentially available to anyone, but mastered by only a few, this type of Haki is a kind of sixth sense. The Observation Haki users gain precognitive and sensitive abilities, as they can perceive the presence, power, and emotions of other living beings even without seeing them. Interestingly, the last Vivre Card databook may have just confirmed that the Voice of All Things is a form of Observation Haki.

A rare, mysterious ability

In One Piece, those who can hear the so-called Voice of All Things have a heightened awareness of their surroundings. This is to the point where they can interact with animals and even inanimate objects as if they were talking to humans.

Also known as Kenbushoku, the Color of Observation allows its users to sense other people’s aura, which can be considered as some kind of “voice." Indeed, with Kenbushoku, it’s possible to foresee moves and intentions, as well as make a rough assessment of a certain individual’s emotional state and overall strength.

Much like the Voice of All Things, Observation Haki works even if its targets are hidden from sight. A testament to this, Admiral Fujitora can fight effectively despite being blind, and this is only due to his outstanding mastery of Kenbushoku. Thanks to it, Fujitora can perfectly visualize the auras and feelings of other people in his mind’s eye, which allows him to compensate for his blindness.

Members of the Three-Eyed Tribe can utilize the inborn power of their third eye to access the Voice of All Things. However, they must practice specifically to do so. Aside from them, so far, there are only a few confirmed users of the Voice of All Things among the countless characters of One Piece.

Monkey D. Luffy, was able to hear the Sea Kings and Zunesha. Likewise, he could converse with the Iron Giant Emet, whereas nobody around him could hear the robot. The legendary Joy Boy was also able to interact with Emet, hearing its voice and answering it.

Gol D. Roger, the all-powerful Pirate King, used the Voice of All Things several times. He felt the voices of the Sea Kings and also sensed the voice of Big Mom’s Road Poneglyph, which allowed him to lead his comrades to Skypiea. Moreover, he perceived Zunesha’s presence.

Kozuki Oden could hear the Sea Kings and Zunesha, much like Roger. Just like the late Pirate King, however, it remains unclear, whether Oden could talk back to animals and objects or not. Oden passed this rare trait to his son Momonosuke.

Despite his very young age, Momonosuke displayed great talent for the Voice of All Things. Not only did he feel Zunesha’s voice, but he was able to fully interact with the centuries-old elephant, giving it the order to attack Jack and his henchmen.

As the current incarnation of the Ancient Weapon Poseidon, Shirahoshi can summon Sea Kings. As seen in One Piece's Fish-Man Island Arc, however, the Ryugu Kingdom’s Mermaid Princess was also able to speak with Sea Kings, communicating with them perfectly, as if she was using the Voice of All Things.

The One Piece Vivre Card databook hints at the truth

An encyclopedia-style publication aimed to complement the One Piece manga, the Vivre Card databook has been acknowledged as a reliable source of information by Eiichiro Oda himself. A new batch of Vivre Card was released on September 4, 2024, and it contained information about several characters, including Momonosuke.

In his profile card, Momonosuke was listed as an Observation Haki user. However, he was never seen using any traditional form of Kenbushoku. Even when he sensed how Luffy was doing against Kaido and Big Mom, his insight was unusual for a Kenbushoku user. Despite being a skilled Observation Haki user, Yamato wasn’t able to sense Luffy’s condition as good as Momonosuke did.

One Piece also showed Momonosuke having some kind of telepathic link with Luffy. Even though Luffy is clearly neither an animal nor an inanimate object, this only increases the mystery around Momonosuke’s sensitive abilities.

Just like Momonosuke, Shirahoshi was listed as a Kenbushoku user despite never displaying the ability to use the Color of Observation. Shirahoshi’s mother, Queen Otohime, was a rather skilled Observation, as she could sense the emotions of every single person present on Fish-Man Island, and flawlessly dodge projectiles by predicting their trajectory.

However, Shirahoshi never showed any sign of such skills in One Piece. Considering that both Momonosuke and Shirahoshi are Voice of All Things users, perhaps the Vivre Card databook is trying to imply that this mysterious ability is nothing more than a form of Observation Haki.

Granted, no explicit confirmation was given, and, in any case, the Vivre Card databook is often subject to inaccuracies. Nevertheless, given their similarities, it would be anything but a surprise if the Voice of All Things was some unique, perhaps innate form of Observation Haki.

Luffy, who is a confirmed user of both the Voice of All Things and the Color of Observation, has been noted to have a gift for sensing the emotions of living things. Silvers Rayleigh described this ability as Observation Haki. It’s not too farfetched to think that the Voice of All Things is a form of Observation Haki extended to inorganic things.

Voice of All Things, Breath of All Things, and Observation Haki

During his fight with Mr 1 in the Arabasta Arc, Roronoa Zoro unconsciously used both Armament Haki and Observation Haki. Interestingly, in the latter case, the green-haired swordsman displayed an ability very similar to the Voice of All Things.

Out of nowhere, Zoro entered a state of omniscience that granted him precognitive and clairvoyant powers. Thanks to them, he was able to dodge the stones that were about to crush him by sensing them. As per Zoro’s explicit words, he didn’t just avoid the rocks, but knew where they would fall beforehand as he could feel their “breath”.

Shortly thereafter, Zoro quickly located and retrieved his sword, even though it was buried under the massive pile of rubble. Zoro also ascribed this feat to his ability to feel the “breath” of an inanimate object, in this case, one of his swords. He then said that he could feel a very definite presence from rocks, trees, the ground, and everything around him.

Finally, Zoro attacked Mr 1, cutting through his steely body. While the power needed to cut through steel was granted by what is now known to be a form of Armament Haki, before being able to unleash it, Zoro had to use his so-called Breath of All Things ability to sense the “breath” of steel.

The exact nature of Zoro’s Breath of All Things has never been adequately clarified in One Piece. All that is known is that Zoro gained increased space awareness, becoming able to perceive things far beyond normal sensory abilities. While this is much akin to Observation Haki, it actually even surpasses the average Kenboshoku.

Normally, Observation Haki only works on living beings who have intent. Kenbushoku users shouldn’t be able to predict where falling rocks will land, as rocks are inanimate objects with no intent. Using a basic form of Observation Haki, Enel was foreseeing and thus dodging all of Luffy’s attacks. However, Luffy bypassed Enel’s Kenbushoku by literally shutting down his mind.

When Luffy started throwing random, unintentional punches, Enel was unable to predict them despite his best efforts to do so. With this in mind, the Breath of All Things seems to be an advanced form of Observation Haki, much like the Future Sight ability.

Both these abilities go beyond the mere perception of intent, allowing their users to foresee a precise sequence of forthcoming events. In the case of the Breath of All Things, this result is achieved by gaining elevated instincts that allow the user to understand everything that’s going on around him.

The Breath of All Things is a state of heightened awareness in which a character can harmonize with the surrounding environment. Its similarity to the Voice of All Things is evident, if not obvious, and so it’s the link to the Observation Haki.

With slightly different applications, all three of these powers aim at gaining insight into what’s around, whether it’s people, other living beings, or even objects. Most likely, both the Breath and the Voice of All Things stem from Color of Observation, as unique forms of this Haki type.
